Haiku Manifesto

I decided to present the EVOKE manifesto of 2020 in the form of four Haiku poems.

A wise man said -
"Be the change you want to see."
Do this together.

All over our world -
visionaries and doers,
come to act the change

Know what's right -
do that which is good…

SMS information on medical emergencies

In Sweden a large number of people have, through jobs, schools, sport clubs or NGOs been trained in first aid. This means that an estimated 20% of the population have the capacity to keep a persons heartbeating until professional medical help can arrive. Still many Swedes die from cardiac arrest or similiar problems.

Why is this?

First of all, few people are aware of what is going on behind the wall of the house they're walking by, or in the car standing to the side of the road.… Continue

Uncertainties in sickness and in health

Uncertainties are one of the most problematic concepts not only in pandemics, but in all kinds of science communication.
Relevant science is complex and with the complexity comes often seemingly contradictory findings. A researcher in the field in question will most likely not notice the contradictory nature of the findings, but rather appreciate the addition to the complexity.

The role of science communicators is to guide the non-experts through the…

Stockholm's green wedges and Urban National Park

Stockholm is my current home town, and it is one of the more interesting cities in the world right now when it comes to urban resilience. The cities main efforts are centered around the so called Green Wedges. These wedges are remnants of old royal parks and military areas that have been protected from urban development. They begin all the way in the city centre and stretch to the rural areas… Continue

Local Knowledge and the swingset

First of all a small disclaimer: This post is not exactly according to the instructions for Acting Local Knowlege. The object of choice is not handheld, but I think this is balanced by its symbolic power. Also, the contents is not Indigenous in its nature, but local and insightful enough to fit the purpose.
So here goes nothing.

I decided to mark this swingset in my neighborhood. I printed on a plastic…

Record breaking brainstorming session results in world changing currency

The process so far
A record breaking, 6 weeks long, brainstorming session among the sharpest young brains in the world in 2010, lit a torch that today has ignited the a bonfire. During the 10 years that has passed since the massive session countries around the world have been introduced to the concepts envisioned. After 5 long years of selling in the idea, the East African Union caught on to the idea in 2015 and decided to run with the ball. Internal discussions started… Continue

The story of the cod and the dead sea,

As I grow old and tell my grandchildren's children about the world I grew up in and the world I have put in there hands to care for I will leave them with one lesson, and one lesson only: The lesson of tipping points and thresholds.
To explain this confusing piece of wisdom in a clear way I will use the example of the Baltic Sea.
I will tell them the following story:

When I was just a kid, younger than you are now, the Baltic was a…

Conservation 'with' and 'through' people in the world's biggest game reserve.

In most rural areas of Tanzania, farming of food and cash crops is a major occupation for the majority of the people. The yields, however, barely suffice their basic requirement. This is the case around one of the worlds largest game reserves, Selous Game Reserve. It covers a staggering 55 000 km2, an area larger than Ireland and is home to much of East Africas wildlife.
Since it's not a tradition of the people in these areas to keep livestock, particularly…

The testimony of butterflies.

Currently, a majority of the world's population lives in urban areas. Many of these people are allready dependent on their own food production in these urban areas, either for their direct survival or as additional nutrients. In the future, as more an more people will move to urban areas, an increasing number of people will be dependent on this.
Much of the food crops we grow today are dependent on…

Amana Vijana Centre and Sanda High School - 10 years down the road

So what happened with the girls that took part in our exchange programs?
For those of you who are lost all ready I recommend my previous post "Amana Vijana Center and Sanda High School"
You've read it?
Ok, let's continue.

The exchanges took place in 2003 and 2005, 5 and 7 years ago today. Much has passed since and I have shifted on "a year or two here, a year or two there" basis between Tanzania and Sweden. The girls, all at the time of the…

Amana Vijana Centre and Sanda High School

Two years after graduating high school I found myself working in the slum in Dar es Salaam (DSM), Tanzania. Being a rapidly growing urban area in one of the poorest countries in the world DSM is full of young people with lots of vision, and little opportunity to see these turn into reality.
In Illala, a neighborhood in central DSM a local church started a youth center some 12 yrs ago. The center offers training in English, secretary skills, computer as well as daytime activities for…

Swapping shopping for swap-shopping

Last week I worked on our exhibition "Walk in Closet" on the Science Festival in Gothenburg.

The exhibition was held in the middle of Gothenburg's largest shopping mall (Nordstan) and attracted thousands of people every day.
The exhibition dealt with the nature behind our clothes and how our clothes affect the environment. One display was by far more popular than the others. That was the swap-shop.
As an alternative to buying new clothes we latched on to the trend of…

Awarding eco-friendly behavior

I met up with an interesting person the other day. I had booked a meeting with him to squeeze him on ideas for a book I'm working on.
Don't ask me how, but during the course of the conversation we steered on to the topic of money and new approaches to financial exchanges. He told me of a new project, still in the pipeline and highly classified, of which he didn't want me to give away too much info.
But, hey, this IS Evoke, right? Information is everything!
The solution…

Dr. Mukwege and the women.

A couple of months ago I had the pleasure of having , Dr. Denis Mukwege over for dinner. He was in Sweden to receive an award and deliver a speech at a conference and since my wife grew up in DRC and my father in law worked with him on hospitals there, we decided to invite him.…

Albaeco and the Walk In Closet

I join up with Albaeco in my strife for improved water situation in the world. Through volunteering at this non-profit company I help create an exhibition on how we produce, consume, wear and treat our clothes is related to the complex global systems around us (in society as well as nature).
One of the displays in the expo is very graphical. It is called the Water Wall and consists of a small piece of cotton fabric on display. Behind it is a wall of…

Smart water filters

Abul Hussam is a chemistry professor at George Mason University in Virginia, USA. Hussam is originally from Bangladesh and has devoted much of his professional life trying to solve a problem that well-meaning but oblivious well drilling campaigns created in his homeland. In large parts of eastern India and western Bangladesh high levels of arsenic naturally occurs in the groundwater. When wells are drilled to provide clean fresh… Continue

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
