Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

  • WHICH great challenges and social problems should the EVOKE Network tackle next?

In my opinion, the best approach to next years EVOKE is to approach it from a thematic perspective. Assuming that we would want EVOKE to be a growing phenomena in the years to come we must allow us to do more than only scratch the surface. One way of doing this would be to devote each new "season" of EVOKEs to a new theme. This would allow for the Agents to really Learn/Act/Imagine on a specific theme for a continuous period of time.
This approach however requires the themes to be wide enough to address complexities and have multiple entry points for agents with different interests.
My suggestion for next years theme would be "Planetary Boundaries". These are 9 areas in which scientists have defined the "safe planetary operating space that will allow humanity to continue to develop and thrive for generations to come". These areas include, among others, Climate Change, Land Use, Biodiversity Loss and Global Fresh Water Use.

Here is the article in the special Issue of Nature from September 2009:

  • WHERE in the world should the network try to build up new EVOKE communities?
The future of Evoke in my opinion lies in regionalizing the challenges while requiring exchange between the regions to succeed with evokes. There are a number of good reasons for this. Addressing complex socio-ecological problems is a highly context dependent task. What works in one setting will most likely not be applicable in another setting. Also, most agents have a very good insight in their local system and can supply very qualified ideas and advice in that context. By dividing in the agents in, say, five geographical regions you instantly create a filter for how to find good ideas from a particular region. Suddenly, Evokers from Europe can be faced with the challgenge of finding "Good examples of "X" from Asia" and by using the local knowledge of the Evokers in that region solve it in a satisfying way.
With enough Agents around the world involved in Urgent Evoke it would be possible to create these regional challenges while increasing the interaction between the different regions.

  • WHO would you encourage to play Season 2?
High School/Seconday School students as well as College/University students.

  • WHAT new tools would you want as an EVOKE agent?
I would want to be able to follow evidence from particular Evokes or agents in an easier way. Also, some sort of flow where you can see what your friends recent activities are would be nice.

  • WHY would you come back for a second Season? What more would you want from the experience?
The main challenge for Evoke is to remain relevant and a tool for changing the world through your everyday life. While this season did "the trick" for me by being a new and fresh way of channeling my will to take an active part in improving the world around me, next season must kick it up a notch.
I think, as I've mentioned that a combination of regionalizing the challenges while finding inspirations in other regions is one way to do this.

Now what do YOU think?

"I love that you've brought this to attention. An extensive database of uncommon but resistant and hardy plants/foods could be developed and organized by climate. Ease of growth and processing should also be taken in to account. I will try to…"

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
