So what's next?

In order to be a truly great social innovator you need to take as many problems as you can find and turn them into situations that will be mutually beneficial to both you and the environment at large, including the natural environment. It is due to this that I have come up with a few ideas for the next season of Evoke. There are some things that I think need…

Who would you ask in a crisis?

In the year 2011 when the next flu pandemic breaks out in South Africa we will be ready. I have already decided who I will have on call, just on case. I will make sure that in case of an emergency I will have on call all the writers in the town, city or country. Now you may think that this is a bit funny, perhaps you are even wondering what the writers could…

Crisis Secret Unravelled...

When reading through this week’s information for crisis communication there was one section that caught my attention. It wasn’t one particular extract, or comment, but rather a wh*** section on risk and how to communicate effectively during a crisis.…

100 years from now...

The year is 2087. I am 100 years old. It is finally my time. I am in the throws of death, even modern medicine and the improvements that modern man has been able to make to my health cannot keep me alive for much longer. But there is one thing that I must do before I die.…

The Great Barrier Reef - The world's last great natural wonder

I’m sure all of you know about, or have heard of, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. One of the world’s most beautiful places, but also one of the world’s most tantalizing and delicate. The Great Barrier Reef is managed as a marine park by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) on the…

Grahamstown - Disaster Ready

I found out from my research for this week’s Act Mission that Grahamstown actually has quite a strong urban resilience plan in place in case of emergency and it is ongoing, which makes it a valuable resource in the ongoing battle for sustainability.…

Future crisis - Ushahidi Help!

Thinking about it now, sitting here. The future is quite scary, well the unknown is scary, and the future is unknown. There are lots of things that can go wrong. But probably the most likely is a water crisis. Especially since the Eastern Cape is in the midst of one of the worst droughts that we have seen in years, if not, decades. It rains, but not enough,…

Rwandan women empowered by the beautiful game

I chose a story based on something that I find relevant on y life. I have just graduated with a Bachelor in Commerce degree and I therefore was very interested in the story about the world food programme (WFP) buying locally grown rice to feed school children in some of the poorest areas in Ghana. The programme benefits not only…

facebook money

I think Facebook is the way in which the world’s money will be changed. I believe that Facebook will be the only social networking site left standing after the dust has settled. All the other sites will go the same way as MySpace, a long and dark fall into oblivion where no one will even remember the names.…

BREAKING NEWS – This just in! The World Bank has just unveiled their new world currency. It is stipulated that all the countries all over the world have to adopt this new currency before the end of this year. That’s the end of 2020 for all you hermits out there. This is absolutely unfounded and has taken a lot of people by…

Water Visionary

I decided to stick close to home for his week’s Act Mission. There is this guy in my community called Philemon Hlambisi. He is a social innovator and water visionary. He helps to get fresh water to the underprivileged people in the location who often can’t even afford a taxi to come into town to get a bottle of fresh water for them and their…

In the management field I obviously take the side of big corporate business. But I also feel there is a great need to be very much more involved and conscious about the environment and how we are using, and in some cases abusing it.…

Party like it's 1999...

It’s my birthday. It’s my 33rd birthday. My wife invited all our friends round to our house to come and celebrate with me. So far everything is going well. We are all having a drink outside on the patio while we wait for the food to cook. As I look around I see how much we rely on power, and I realise how glad I am that they came up with this safe…

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

I walk to the fridge and open it to see what there is for me to eat. All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
