A crash course in changing the world.
SoHo, New York City- 2020
I pull the collar of my jacket up to cover my neck as the frigid wind blows past me, leaving me shivering. As I walk down Houston Street, I see a newspaper and a magazine in a stand; One has pictures of children starving in Japan, their eyes sunken and vacant, their ribs pertruding, but the magazine shows only "glamorous" celebrities dressed down for the Acadamy Awards. It is sad to think that while nobody has bought the paper relating to the hunger crisis is Tokyo, the celebmag is selling quite briskly.
I am walking to my job at the Central Park Zoo. Ever since I was a child, I seemed to be better with animals than human beings. Despite this, I care for all living things: plants, animals, people, micro-organisms. I've lived in SoHo since I was nineteen (I'm 23 in 2020), and I know my way around the Big Apple fairly well. As soon as I reach the zoo, I get to work by feeding the penguins. I don't know why, but these fellows really appeal to me in their little black and white tuxedos, and some of them are always rubbing their wet heads against my legs.
I had already fed the polar bears when HE came, and by HE I mean Alchemy. The large man towered over me and alerted me, "The time has come. No doubt you have seen the news about Tokyo."
"Yyyesss, s..ir," I stutter, a wee bit frightened of Alchemy.
"I believe you can help us with the problem...." Alchemy continued.
"I will do what I can," I replied.
And here I am today.
