A crash course in changing the world.
I read a lot about different projects on the global giving website. I decided to donate very quickly because I often want to support a project but don't know which one to support. There are a lot of different projects and not every organisation has a good repudation. Global giving convinced me because you can find a lot of infomation, pictures and contacts. Still - there are a lot of opportunities left. In the end, it was a quote from a woman which was crucial for my decision:
"Before I was illiterare, I couldn't do business, save money in the bank or find my way around because I couldn't read signs. Now, I have my small salon and a bank accoun and I can even read signs!"(Nyiranteziryayo Viridian, The new owner of a salon, former student)
Because of this quote I decided to donate 20USD t buy chalk for one year to an organization which teaches Rwandan women to read, write and calculate and is called Global Grassroots.
In developed countries it is natural to be able to write, read or calculate. To be honest, I had no clue what it means to not to be able to read signs. Getting along without this knowledge is very difficult and almost impossible because illiteracy really reduces your scale of operation. This became clear to me when I read this quote.
Therefore I decided that a good way to empower women is to educate them. By educating them, women get encouraged to do business so they have toe opportunity to become independant. Global Grassroots seems like a credible organisation which really tries to improve the situation of women. Just by donating 20USD one can buy chalk for one year! This is not a huge amount of money and I think everyone should do one's bit to empower women.
