They say charity needs to start at home. To complete this part of the Food Security Mission, I needed to get REAL LOCAL - my own back yard.
With enough fertile land to grow some of my own food, and a desire to become more self-sufficient and able to help others, starting my own garden was an easy decision to make. Being an Evoke Agent, and needing to complete this mission helped to get my gears in motion.
In Central Upstate New York, the weather can turn ugly and cold before seedlings have a fighting chance. So, my wife and I have started in-doors. We have planted some seeds to get things going inside. When the weather is more stable, we will move them out into the back yard, where they will get enough sunlight and water to grow.
We started with some supplies that we had left over from last year. Last year, we planted mainly herbs and flowers. This year we will focus on developing enough food to sustain us - or as much as we can. Both my wife and I are vegetarians. We do consume milk and eggs - but no meat of any kind (not even fish).
We have the seedlings in front of a window, to help get them started.
We have egg plant, and summer squash, and some others. I would be very interested in hearing from anyone who has grown any sort of beans. I don't believe we have any beans started yet - but I think they will be very important for us, as a good source of protein.
We are also planning on starting a "Farm Punk" group - but in the amount of time we had to prepare for this Mission Evidence - we could only manage to get started improving our own Food Security.
We will also try to volunteer time to the Food Bank of Central New York, which I mentioned in a previous post. But, because of the size of that organization, I expect it will take some time for them to get back to me regarding my offer to assist them with their Information Security needs. Perhaps they need someone to help out with distributing their "container gardens". While I don't have a lot of information about that particular project yet, it sounds the most promising.
We will visit the Sullivan Food Pantry at the end of the month, to see if we can assist anyone there - and find out if there is any interest in sustainable food security. If nothing else, I'm sure it will be a great place for us to publicize our "Farm Punk" meetings (which we will be holding at the Sullivan Free Public Library).
Step by step, we walk the thousand mile road!
