Buoyed by the success of several small-scale local currencies, several
counties in western North Carolina have launched the area's first
regional currency, the Blue Ridge Bucks.
The introduction of this currency will serve several purposes: It will
keep local money in the area instead of being siphoned off to distant
corporate HQs; it will help create economic resilience and a strong
community economy by encouraging people to shop locally and to accept
BRBs in return; and it will increase interest in one of the area's
biggest economic markets - tourism. By sending out a "starter pack" of
BRBs to tourists requesting travel guides, the BRB Currency Council
hopes to increase interest and to bring more money into the area. Framed
art prints of the BRBs are also available in several local shops, which
have proven to be a favorite souvenir during the pre-launch preview
series.
