Dave Eggers
About a year ago, I first became acquainted with Dave Eggers via his TED talk. He was one of the three winners of the 2008 TED prize, for his work in create public-private partnerships with public schools, particularly in the area of literacy.
I was engaged by the cooky storefront pirate-shop he created to invite students in to work on writing. I could immediately imagine something like that in Toronto, where I come from. I showed the talk to my son, a university student majoring in Creative Writing. We were both hooked on the concept:
"I wish that you — you personally and every creative individual and
organization you know — will find a way to directly engage with a
public school in your area, and that you’ll then tell the story of how
you got involved, so that within a year we have 1,000 examples of
innovative public-private partnerships.”Dave Eggers' website for his public-private partnerships is
www.onceuponaschool. ; His creative writing non-profits are also found at
http://www.826national.org/ ; I have emailed him to ask about mentoring me.
Teresa Snelgrove
Teresa recently gave a very engaging and positive presentation on social entrepreneurship at the school where I teach, in Toronto. Unlike Dave Eggers, who lives in the San Francisco Bay area, Teresa works within 100 km of my home and has a connection to the school where I teach. Her presentation outlined a very clear set of set of actions and skills required by the social entrepreneur. I have written to Teresa, to ask her about mentoring me.
I'll let you know if I get any reply to my inquiries!
