If you have not seen the movie, "
Home", you should. It shows amazing images of the wh*** world, from the air. In order to make the film available to everyone in the world to see, it is hosted
in its entirety by Youtube. And at 1 hr 33 minutes, that is a very generous thing. It is mentioned also in Deborah Cazden's…

This blog post is not submitted as evidence for any of our missions. It is just something I want to think about and maybe it is something you have been thinking about, too.
The way we communicate with others is not, specifically, awarded any points in Evoke. In some ways, that is good, because there are many who are communicating in different languages, and it would be unfair to discredit someone who is making an effort in English, when it is not their first language. On the other…

Once you have completed your IMAGINE3 challenge, and you have imagined your special celebration in 2020, why not take the time to write a letter to the Future You. You can do it at
FutureMe,orgI am an optimist. I believe that if you take the time to write to yourself, you are taking an important step to making your wishes come true.
If you send me a link to your IMAGINE3 challenge, and let me know that
you wrote a letter to your future…

You've been working hard on your missions and quests and your creative juices are almost exhausted. You need a little pick-me-up. An escape into sustainability fantasy-land. Tom Giesler's "Reduce. Re-use. Reinvent" offers, free-of-charge, the following
patents, which will "save our galaxy". They are all sustainable, and certainly could reduce our dependence on fossil fuels - although one does involve the emission of some methane, I…

Maybe what is old is new again?
Our family has a tradition of getting out the extremely old ice cream churn for family dinners on hot nights in the summer. The layer between inner chamber and outer bucket is filled with a combination of salt and ice, which can reach temperatures as low as -21.1 degrees Celsius.
The churning is necessary to prevent the development of large ice crystals as the custard freezes, which would give the ice cream a bad "mouth feel" (that's what food…

Well, as some of you already know, I have added my name to the list of volunteers at The Stop, our amazing community gardens and food security people in the west end of Toronto. There are lots of ways that you can get involved there, too, if you live in Toronto. Have a look at their volunteer page and also their events calendar! Some pretty exciting and high profile once-off events are in store in March.

September 2020Inspired by this
audio show and using Bill Mollison's Book,
Permaculture, a Designer's Manual as a roadmap, we have been involved for several years in the redesign of a 2-acre plot of land to provide food and energy. The garden provides food for ourselves and others in our neighbourhood. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of…

Toronto, Ontario, Canada is a city of over 2.5 million, and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) has a population of approximately 6 million.
Toronto's
Toronto Food Policy Council (TFPC) formed in 1991. Toronto was one of the first world cities to sign onto the United Nations' Healthy Cities movement. They cite a lack of leadership federally and provincially, for the creation of this council.…

Today I got a positive response from Teresa Snelgrove about mentoring me in social entrepreneurship. Great news - will update on that partnership as things progress.

The Canadian Charity website,
"Canada Helps", was started by a group of school friends who wanted to find a way for Canadians to make all of their charitable donations online, by going to one site. Sounds like a no-brainer now, but this was back in the late 90s, when the majority of charities did not have an online presence, and most donors were afraid of making financial transactions online. To me, this is an example of many of the EVOKE powers, but…

Dave Eggers
About a year ago, I first became acquainted with Dave Eggers via his TED talk. He was one of the three winners of the 2008 TED prize, for his work in create public-private partnerships with public schools, particularly in the area of literacy.
I was engaged by the cooky storefront pirate-shop he created to invite students in to work on writing. I could immediately imagine something like that in Toronto, where I come from. I showed the talk to my son, a university…

Ethan Zuckerman's 6th tip, "What you have matters more than what you lack", ties in to many of the other tips and thoughts posted. It ties in to the idea of knowing about existing infrastructure, customs, and day to day realities.
The key to becoming a successful social entrepreneur lies in understanding what those raw materials, infrastructures and resources are, and therein lies the challenge and any potential solutions.
The adoption of cellular phone technology "leapfrogged"…
