Sam Goldman was raised in Pakistan, Peru, India and Rwanda. One of his friend's sons was burned badly by a kerosene lamp. His idea was to make an affordable and safe light for people. His idea was D.light.
Doug shifted from Google to D.light after most of his friends had also. While selling these lights, a village shopkeeper (after buying 5 lights) took him into the larger town to some of the larger marketplaces. After explaining to the shopkeeper about the quality and usefulness of these lights, the second shopkeeper bought a lot of the lights, then another shopkeeper bought a lot as well. When Doug asked the village shopkeeper why he was helping him like this, the shopkeeper replied with "I am doing this to help my people." I think this is true because if you encourage someone to buy something, then they find that it is useful, they will encourage others and you will get this chain reaction.
D.light has helped people in Haiti and China when there has been disaster, and they will continue helping people learn about the dangers of kerosene lamps and candle as a night time study light.
