In Canada, there is a city called Salt Springs. They have their own money, called Salt Spring Dollars ($$). They are equal to Canadian dollars. One of the ways this idea works is that they have well known native artists art on the bills, they have the same dimensions as regular Canadian money, so they can be inserted in ATMs, they expire, for which you need to trade them in for newer editions or Canadian money, it encourages local retail and have anti-counterfeit measures built into them.
Another type of money that I just remembered is Canadian Tire money. Every time you purchase something at a Canadian Tire store (Canadian Tire is a sports and outdoors store), you get a certain amount back in Canadian Tire money. Then when you go back you can purchase items with either the Canadian Tire money or Canadian dollars.
