A crash course in changing the world.
After watching 60 Minutes a few weeks ago, I found an absolutely amazing energy
company in California called Bloom Energy. This company produces boxes, called Energy Servers. These servers are built with solid
oxide fuel cell technology, and produce clean, reliable, affordable electricity
at the customer site. According to
Bloom Energy, “Fuel cells are devices that convert fuel into electricity
through a clean electro-chemical process rather than dirty combustion. They are
like batteries except that they always run.” Each Bloom Energy Server provides 100kW of power, enough to
meet the needs of 100 average homes or a small office building, in about the size
of a standard parking space. This
technology is way beyond me, but companies such as Google, Wal-Mart, ebay,
FedEx and Coke have already began experimenting by including these boxes in their
power grids.
In looking at some of the other posts on this topic, it seems as if there are many great
ideas about how to produce energy.
One of the posts that I read spoke of using garbage as fuel. This is very familiar to me, as the
community that I lived in during my undergraduate years used this
technology. They burned all the
trash that could be used to create energy. I know that this process does not sound very “clean,” but
they apparently have a way of creating a low amount of pollution while creating
a large amount of energy.
