Living on the outskirts of NYC is sometimes annoying. It takes me forever to get to school, and there isn't a lot of cheap transportation options around here, but there are some good things, like the ample amount of garden space! For over 10 years, my mom has had a small garden in our backyard. Growing up on a farm in South America, she knows her ins and outs of planting different types of veggies and fruits. We grown pumpkins, eggplants, 4 types of peppers, onions, tomatoes, potatoes, raspberries, strawberries, string beans, peaches and we are in search of a small apple tree to fit in. Sadly, I don't have an amazing green thumb like my mom, but I do help in watering, harvesting, and collecting the seeds from the harvest to save for next year. It takes a lot of time and when you first start, a lot of money, but in the long run, we save even more money than we put in. We don't have to go to the grocery store all the time for the things we grow, and we usually grow a plentiful amount and pickle most of it, so that it last through the winter. Another good thing is that we control what goes into the soil. We don't have to worry if companies put harmful chemicals in our food.
