outside the bubble that surrounds local and foreign Rhodes University students lies that food security issues that plague many in this small rural town. the heat, the effects of the HIV/AIDS virus, general poverty and insufficient means to sustain oneself and their family are some of the factors contributing to the undernourishment of the inhabitants of the this rural community.
i guess the problem really lies in not knowing or being able to effectively find ways to sustain oneself, feed and generally just live. According to the given article by Sithembile Ndema, providing the necessary tools and knowledge is what is needed to dig people out of the h*** of food insecurity and sustainable farming methods.
With the above in mind, the Umthathi Training Project in Grahamstwon was established over a decade ago to try solve the aforementioned problem one step at a time by providing the vast impoverished communities and schools in and around Grahamstown with the requisite skills and training 'lectures' to promote self sufficiency.
This programme is under an NGO in our town that has expanded dramatically over the last decade as i have already mentioned. the progress they have made thus far is teach women adn over 40 schools how to provide for themselves healthy meals, and where there is extra from the homegrown vegetables and foods, they sell or willingly contribute to others in the area.
it only takes one person and some effort to realise a dream like this to teach people how to be self-sufficient and resilient despite the climate changes and how these are affecting farming methods in vast rural populations as Sithembile Ndema says in her article.
