The future of EVOKE

To begin with, being a part of this global challenge has been both absolutely thrilling, but also quite difficult in that I was challenged each week to look beyond my current set of circ**stances which mainly involved the activities geared toward me attaining my Honours degree here in South Africa. This experience undoubtedly opened my eyes to what is really happening in…

reducing panic and the spread of flu pandemic in Harare

It’s 2011, and the most severe strain of the influenza virus has hit the upscale suburb of Borrowdale in northern Harare where I live.

Thanks to the advancement of technology and the availability and ease of access to the internet, my efforts to assemble a team to offer and administer psychological first

aid to…

Coming to terms with uncertainty: the role of authorities

The secret of crisis communication is chose to focus on is “Coming to terms with uncertainty”. From this article, what stood out more for me was the fact that when

dealing with health pandemics and authorities such as affected governments and

the World Health Organisation, these organisations play a large role in

creating panic by reveals certain details of the pandemic, but at the same…

with age comes wisdom...

The important message I would like to pass on to future, younger generations is about the direct relationship between wealth and the conservation of our natural resources and environment. When I say wealth, I do not necessarily mean monetary wealth, but the benefit and assurance that these resources will be there to support and sustain us for as long as we care for them. With this in

mind, the ecological and green issues back in 2010 were starting to kick off,

but began trailing…

The beliefs of the Seventh Day Adventist Church will live on...

As a devout Seventh Day Adventist, I chose the symbol of our church as the piece of information and knowledge I would like to pass on to future generations and my peers in 2010. The image and the description of all the different parts of the picture clearly relays what my church believes in, as well as the acceptance and dependance on God.

Why this image is important to pass on is that…

Maasai weather forecast in Tanzania

The case study I chose to dwell on was that on weather forecasting by the Maasai tribe in Tanzania. The lessons I learnt from this bit of indigenous knowledge

was that this group of people who have been in existence for many generations

have managed to keep their traditions, customs and nomadic way of life alive

despite advances in technology and the brisk invasion of Western culture. The

gist…

Grahamstown and Cape Town's resilience plans

I am currently a student in a small Eastern Cape town, and as such, there is no known resilience plan in Grahamstown. Other than the water initiatives being

put in place by members of the student oriented Galela Amanzi, Grahamstown does not seem to have any contingency

plans that are widely known or recognisable to the student population that I

interacted with. The purpose of Galela…

My blog - the futures of Grahamstown and Cape Town

In the year 2020, large bright green water tanks will be a common feature in the Grahamstown landscape as more individuals and local firms have realised the

importance of water and its conservation should this town want to survive amidst

the drought that has been ravaging this part of the Eastern Cape. Lush grass

patches and gardens too are more common in the landscape thanks to the efforts

of…

ushahidi and service delivery issues in South Africa

Given the current rise in service delivery riots and protests that are sweeping South African towns and cities, Ushahidi may be used to track developments in this area (social disruption). The political and economic climate in South Africa has been a cause for concern over the last few years thus the eruption of the riots and recent municipal protests came as no surprise to some who feel that these kinds of activities by the lower paid and underserved in our communities will continue despite… Continue

property inheritance rights and HIV/AIDS afflicted women

The news story I chose to follow is on the above topic, a fairly important one inSouth Africa which is very "African" and patriarchial. Because of the stigma and discrimination that is attached to victims of the virus, the plight of women is heightened as there are times when they will be beneficiaries to land and property because of their status. The article on the United Nations Radio website seeks to educate rural women on their rights to property and being economically active regardless of… Continue

life in 2020 for empowered women

the initiative i chose to select in my previous blog was about fighting HIV/AIDS and finding ways to empower afflicted women in South Africa.

In 2020, the group of women who are a part of this network have been quite busy in the last few years. Mabel and Tshidi decided to join forces in late 2010 and set up a small kiosk/market stall in their township to help sustain their families and find money for treatment.

The women who are a part of this program have provided testimonies… Continue

Fight HIV/AIDS by Empowering Women in South Africa

for this week's task, I have selected to support this initiative in South Africa, which seeks to empower, offer counselling and training to poor women in South Africa afflicted with the HIV/AIDS virus. This project also seeks to help women overcome the stigma attached to the disease that they may experience, as well as find means to help them access medication and income generating opportunities.

It is organisations like these that garner a lot of support as they do not necessarily… Continue

the barter system in Zimbabwe

"Thanks John, I'll take over from here".

Folks, this is Tatenda reporting live in front of Bon Marche Supermarket in Borrwodale where a new phenomenon is occuring: shoppers are trading goods in exchange for the goods others cannot find in shopping centres elsewhere..although this exchange system has been dormant for many year in and around the country, it seems to be coming back in full force given the commodity (goods) shortages currently being experieced in the capital!… Continue

my first experience with buying and trading shares

as an early birthday gift to my siblings and i, my father decided to formally introduce us to the financial market in Zimbabwe by buying us all a certain amount of shares in companies such as Delta Corporation and the largest cellphone network in Zim, Econet Wireless Holdings.

Seeing as though I am in another country studying, my father is the one who tends to monitor the markets but I can too from time to time as the market performance may be asessed online thus I know when a good… Continue

The benefits of the Local Exchange Trading Systems

LETS are revitalising communities around Britain, and other similar communities around the world who have adopted this form of community based mutual aid. By becoming a member of the network, an individual can excange goods and services with other members without the need for direct transactions (hard currency which is difficult to earn). LETS credits are thus generated by providing the goods/services that others may need. One should bear in mind however that this system does greatly differ… Continue

understanding the importance of water..

as we all know, water is a very precious and at times, limited resource. thus by having an event where people can understand the importance of it, they can be more conscious when opening taps or taking unnecessarily long showers.

this event may be a funfare where many childhood games are relived such as the egg and spoon race and other physical activities conducted where people will not be allowed to have water under any circ**stance thus instilling the need to be more conservative of… Continue

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. I walk to the fridge and open it to see what there is for me to eat. All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
