As I'm sure it's been made clear by this point, I believe that environmental protection and sustainability are key to the future of the human population. So, of course, as I scrolled down the list of social entrepreneur blogs, I focused in on those with an environmental focus.
I'm conducting a mini-experiment on minimalist living right now, and I love it. I'm going to rid of some more of my things, but I need to find someone who wants them first. For those things that I still need to conduct my daily life (and for the occasional unnecessary item), I turn to green products whenever possible. This web site provides a list of products to satisfy this requirement. I looked through a few pages, and here's some that jumped out at me:
So, I'm a graduate student, and I have to print out my fair share of papers - awesome, affordable 100% recycled paper!
I LOVE this. See, I really despise greeting cards. They strike me as wasteful and fake, and I've had arguments with people as to why they shouldn't send me cards. But this - a card that turns into a mini-garden - is awesome. Unfortunately they can't ship seeds to the United States (which is a protective measure against invasive species, so I'm totally ok with that), but I'm hoping something will pick up over here.
A practical and conservation issue - my shower burns through hot water in about 15 minutes, and while that's a long shower, I live with three other people who all tend to have to take showers at the same time, so it's one long string of needing hot water. Wasting water is a major peeve of mine, so such things are wonderful.
So...I'll admit that my roommates are not proponents of minimalist living. For the four of us, we have three XBoxes, three PS3s, two Wiis, four desktop computers, and at least four laptops (technically, only one Wii, one computer, and one laptop are mine, though several of these things also belong to my fiance. Granted we all lived separately before we moved in together, but...yeah.). I wish people would just unplug these things when they weren't in use...
I wish I had more time to read through these and find things I could use in my daily life, but alas, time for dinner and another night of research! I might try to work up the guts to email this web site and tell them how awesome they are, but honestly, at this point I'm proud of myself for expressing my opinions on the internet (let's just say...I have self esteem issues). Baby steps.
