Ten years...
It's 9:58 PM on the East Coast of the United States, 3/22/20. I may be in this time zone, I may not be. I'm 33 years old.
I don't see myself ever having children. Certainly not now - being a grad student is difficult already! - very likely not ever. I have my reasons for this, which are irrelevant to the topic at hand (well, we could discuss the human population here, but let's try to avoid that prickly, tangental thought). So it's likely myself, my current fiance (though we've been engaged for almost three years now with no wedding in sight, I hope we can get our act together at some point in the next 10 years), our cat, and other animal companions.
General details, in no particular order. What the social, political, and economic climates will be, I do not know. Small house near the ocean so you can wake up to it in the morning. A full, home-y home, not some huge empty monstrosity. Small, efficient car - I've always wanted one of those little Smart Cars. I've finished my formal education well before this point, but I still take a class here and there. Have to keep up on science, always have to be learning new things, especially if I'll be working hard at educating the next generation on the importance of the environment and protecting it.
In fact, this is how I hope to spend the intervening 10 years, and the hopefully many years after 2020. I want people to understand how awesome nature is, how much we depend on everything else in the world, how important it is to protect the world.
I want the future students I'll be teaching to know what a bluefin tuna is (side note: nice job, CITES. /sarcasm). What a beach free of trash looks like. How a fish tastes. How many organisms live on a coral reef.
I want so badly for the things I love about the world to still be there for them. To still be there in 10 years, and further on.
I want to be relaxing on the porch with a good book and some quiet music, cat in my lap, sun setting, having just enjoyed a dinner made from local fish and vegetables from my garden, when the phone rings.
