A crash course in changing the world.

How Do We Balance the Everyday With Social Innovation?

I am a self-employed, mostly stay-at-home single father of a two-year-old boy.
My concerns are mundane: caring for and educating my son, making enough money to get by while he's little, and maintaining some semblance of sanity and self-fulfillment with the free time I have.

I worry about the world and its problems, but truth be told, it's often difficult to act beyond my day-to-day concerns, even if I can see past them.

I do believe in doing little things every day, in attempting to turn social innovation into an aspect of the mundane. I think that these things are important, but for me these things are not satisfying. Nor will they be. I can't look at the everyday problems and not see the massive underlying problems in our collective thought process.

When the majority of a your day is spent working overtime, raising children, paying/worrying about bills, buying groceries, doing laundry, etc, etc, etc... (in short, exhausting yourself) how do you get involved in changing the world in a satisfying way?

This is a question many of us wrestle with. Hopefully over the next 8 weeks we can craft some answers together.

I think that the governments want to engage people more and more with various activities that are not so necessary so that people won't have time to consider everything and to think about changing the system. Everybody talks about to-do lists, multitasking and seizing every second of the day, but I think that we need spontaneity in order to be able to perceive injustice and to fight against it.

@Milena I am going to add to governments: large corporations and most places with cubicles, and hopefully not sound too conspiracy theory. I think the work place has a lot to do with the multitasking, "I'm always behind" mentality which has people racing around without time to consider the implications of a 40hr work week plus overtime.
Excellent point.

And thank you Ayala for the optimism. You're right of course. ^_^

es a lot of courage to not only be self employed, but also tackling the issues of being a single parent as well. I am in the same boat. I am a single mom of 2, both with special needs, one with autism. I can relate to worrying about how to help the world while trying to keep your own afloat. I believe that is why I decided to join the EVOKE network. I was overjoyed to find a venue to be able to express my ideas on a medium I could use at my leisure. This gives me the ability to at least get my ideas out there where someone might be able to incorporate them into something that can change the world. If I cannot do it directly because of having to take care of my own responsibilities, I can at least take comfort in the hope that they will still be able to help by someone else using them who does have the time, money and energy to work with them.

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development.The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
