It's been a long and stressful day. I'm arriving home late, as usual, and I really could use something to cheer me up.
Just then, I hear my phone vibrate. I've got one new message. An update on the stream about Nepal.
I walk over to the computer and take a look. It's a news update from a partner in the area; new business loans are up 15% the last six months. The initial formation of the savings collective was met with some curiosity and resistance, but once things got going, the venture really took off. Women were no longer in a perpetual state of near-debt. As a result, the local entrepreneurial spirit really took off. Many women are looking into buying their own property and storefronts instead of the expensive leases from landowners. One, a recent graduate from an Indian university, has returned home and is looking to develop Nepal's rural infrastructure to spread high speed internet access. It's great to hear about things like this.
And then some breaking news—even better! Apparently, Nepal's a major female assembly member is well on her way to being elected. A first in the area—quite good considering the situation
just a short while ago. Soon, I forget about the day and am immersed in news about the region. Things aren't so bad after all.
