http://fightgoliath.blogspot.com/This man has a powerful and evocative writing style, with a personal story that lets you know he's not only on the front lines of social innovation, but has seen poverty, war, transformation, and the resilience of people up close.
One of his most recent posts really struck me- awakenings. Mirroring some of the teaching points, he says that the extremely poor are some of the best teachers he has ever had. That such people are survivors, innovative and resourceful in the extreme, and often it's best to listen to them first. His later statements were more extreme, but they are both optimistic and realistic- he says that among these people are the next Albert Einsteins, Ghandis, Mother Theresa, etc. And he's right- there's nothing so different among the extremely poor from anyone else that they could not, given the right opportunities, aspire to amazing heights.
It mirrored one of my own thoughts when I was young, of the tragic loss of geniuses born either too poor or too far from education to ever realize their true potential- the lost Einsteins, Edisons, Pasteurs, and Teslas of the world. If the millions of impoverished people on the planet were to suddenly reach their full potential, socially and mentally, how many wonderful new things would mankind add to it's collective culture? More depressingly, how many things have we missed out on?
