A crash course in changing the world.

Kids need to know that they deserve a better life.

One of my favorite authors and storytellers is Malcolm Gladwell, who wrote the book Blink, about how the unconscious mind makes better decisions than the conscious mind when the situation is complex, the book The Tipping Point, about how one small change can make a world of difference, and more recently the book Outliers about what made the most successful humans of the world so successful.

And in doing the research for Outliers, what Gladwell discovered is that beyond the most rock bottom physical needs of food, water, air, warmth, and light, the two overwhelming commonalities for all of the successful humans were the following two elements:

1. As a kid, the individual’s caregivers consistently demonstrated the belief that the individual deserves the best education possible, and that rather than putting the responsibility on the kid to learn, it is the schools' and teachers' responsibility for ensuring that they give the individual the resources they need, to learn what they need to learn well.

2. The individual was encouraged, and given plenty of opportunities, to explore their own unique interests, at their own speed, so as to allow them to develop their own unique talents and skills as well as self-efficacy, self-esteem, and the ability to joyfully create
self-directed goals.

In other words, kids need to be free to be who they want to be, and to have their own unique styles respected and recognized as we help them understand how the universe works.

Which is why projects such as the children's radio show Meena Radio, in India, are a good start in helping kids there grow up to become successful, and healthy, self-respecting adults. The show features a cartoon character named Meena, who stands up for herself and her dreams of going to school, and helps her village understand why it's important to treat all children as special and valuable, so that they, too, can feel confident enough to climb their own, metaphorical or literal, Mount Everests, both of which mountain climber Santosh Yadav did. Yadav spoke at an event celebrating the kick-off of the radio show, letting the children in the audience know that society doesn't always make it easy for kids to achieve their dreams.

I was just like you – from a small village with a lot of difficulties. I just wanted to study. I come from a very traditional background, a traditional family. It was more difficult for me to cross those cultural taboos than it was for me to climb Everest.

Yadav was fortunate to have a mother who believed that her child deserved to pursue her own path, and supported her in being treated as an individual and being giving the freedom to be herself.

And in support of such efforts to recognize the value of respecting children and valuing their uniqueness, I wonder if it would be good to create a children's book version of my You Are a Flower story. It could be shared with the world, as a free resource for teachers, kids, parents, and organizations promoting respect for all children.

Hmmmmm...

Malcolm Gladwell is also one of my favorite writers. What I really liked about Outliers was that he challenged the conventional idea of successful people being 'self made'. Instead, he showed that successful rely not only on their contemporaries, but often on many previous generations for their success.

I love the radio project-- it reminds me of the Nashe Maalo program in Macedonia, which has been successfully used to promote ethnic tolerance.

Indeed, it's that encouragement/support and opportunities from others that's the key to success. Because that's what gives you the confidence and environment to become "self made". So yeah, you need others to help make you into the self you want to make yourself into! :-)

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
