Innovation is such an important aspect of our society because there's always the need to continue to improve what we have. I once read a quote that stated innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower. Before taking a leadership course, I hadn't realized what that statement meant. Now I realize how important innovation is for a leader. Innovation is the process of creating something new that didn't exist before, whether an idea or product. If a leader is innovative, then they have the upper hand. An innovative leader is able to lead their followers in a way that will be most beneficial.

One of the secrets that I really enjoyed was the following: "What you have matters more than what you lack (If you’ve got a bicycle, consider what you can build based on that, rather than worrying about not having a car, a truck, a metal shop.)" Sometimes we are so caught up in the moment that we are only trying to reach for what we lack. Instead, it is important to draw strength from what we have and improve it that way. It is always easier to build upon something that already exists rather than starting new. And that is exactly what innovators do. They look at something that was previously invented and think of ways to improve it.

I believe that in order to be a great leader, it is important to think of ways in which you can improve the organization or situation. Instead of focusing on the things we do not have, it is important to focus on the skills and traits that we do possess.
