I choose "Managing panic in a pandemic".
It think the meaning of the word panic is a big factor. The word is often used but most of the time there is no panic.
But what is a panic?
For The Nieman Guide panic means that it is a loss of social order and a internal order. In critical situations people often running around and doing what they believe is self-protective. So this might not be a social order but also not be a panic.
For me, everybody speaks of a panic because there is not really another word for bahaving strange or unnormal in situations of stress. And i think in a situation of a pandemic it is not really helpful to use a word loke panic, because i think this makes the wh*** situation more difficult.
The Nieman Guide has five things (safety, calming, connection, efficacy and hope) to reduce that problem. They call it "psychological first aid".
- safety: to get people out of a threat
- calming: help people to "come down" so that they can focus and concentrate on a solution
- connection: to be in connection with other people and not be isolated
- efficacy: when someone is capable of taking action on their own or when they do so as a member of a group, that's collective efficacy
- hope: that the world is predictable and everybody will get through it
