A crash course in changing the world.
In my opinion one of the biggest challenges to food security in our local community is child poverty. One child in four in Nuremberg depends on social transfer benefit payments and every third child suffers from poverty at all.
As one of the most powerless groups in society, children often bear the physical and emotional costs of poverty. This problem manifests itself in bad living conditions like bad housing conditions, frequent unemployment and malnutrition of children.
Due to this drastic rising trend the department for youth, family and social meanings in Nuremberg originated a working program against youth poverty together with supporters as local politicians and actors of the economy and society. In ten guiding sentences a strategy was formed for prevention projects of child poverty. One of these sentences refers to the need of a proper nutrition of children.
The social services department developed a solution to these matters in form of a so called “Nürnberg-Pass”. This pass provides services and benefits in the fields of education, culture, sports and food for children and juveniles who draw social benefits. Among other things they got a grant for lunch to ensure a wealthy nutrition.
This solution may not be very innovative but it helped children in Nuremberg to ease their suffering from poverty a little bit.
