A crash course in changing the world.
I read an interesting case study on CBNRM about The Sustainable Management Of Prunus Africana In The Mount Cameroon....
In the Mt. Cameroon area grows a tree which is called Prunus Africana. Its bark is used to produce drugs by a pharmaceutical company from France. The trading with the bark was the reason why it came to an irresponsible handling with the resources (due to black markets, too much harvesting, fellings...).
The Mount Cameroon Project (MCP) was founded to implement a sustainable management of Prunus Africana in the Mt. Cameroon Area and to maintain the biodiversity in this region.. The management of the project collaborated with the pharmaceutical company Plantecam, the local Forestry service and the local inhabitants. Besides of broadening the participation to all key stakeholders the MCP also organized workshops for inhabitants about good harvesting methods and basically everything they had to know to harvest responsible.
The challenge of an responsible dealing with Prunus Africana could be implemented. MCP could successfully raise awareness of the different problems the area had to face and is now able to protect the local biodiversity.
But the greatest lesson that has been learnt from this study is the importance of supporting existing sustainable livelihoods based on forest resource use. The MCP could also just suggest alternative income generating activities which have nothing to do with the tree like rabbit keeping, provision of roads etc. Nevertheless they found a way how the inhabitants still could earn money from the most important resource and for Plantecam to still produce their products and also protect the environment. A participatory monitoring and evaluation system which was implemented by MCP makes sure that all agreements are reached so far.
A Prunus harvesting union was formed by mostly inhabitants to pass their knowledge.
The harvesting of prunus bark is a way of life in the local communities around the mountain. The sustainable livelihood approach adopted by MCP has helped to generate benefits to the commuinities through the efficient utilisation of biological capital, improving trade and marketting patterns that bring increased profits to direct users, and strengthen conservation best practices.
