I just learned that my Home state of Oregon is the second least food secure state in the union. the amout of hungry people in my state has increased drastically in recent years with the increase in unemployment caused by the economic crisis.
i've lived in an unemployed household but we never went hungry and it shocks me that over six percent of the people in my state don't always have enough to eat. the oregon food bank is of course very concerned about our lack of food security, but because the problem is mostly economic there isn't much they can do.
as a fat happy member of the middle class youth with a farm in my yard i feel grossly responsible to help in a non charitable, sustained, and community building way. it might be possible to harness the unemployed workforce into sustainable gardening work so that they can provide their own charity. someday i hope we can re-define the meaning of "will work for food"
this is a problem. i can't solve it alone. i'm evoking.
the place where i learned about this:
