Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

Sometimes when people try to be heroes, they focus on their own accomplishments. Being a hero is about wearing a flashy cape, swooping in, making a lot of noise and banishing the bad guys, right? Maybe not so much. Being a hero essentially means saving people--helping fix their problem, get them out of a jam the best way possible.

That may not mean being flashy or original. It may mean listening, instead of talking. It may mean watching, instead of acting. It may mean finding the quiet, practical person who has already figured out how to fix this problem, and working out how to scale up their solution and share it with a lot more people.

The good news is--you don't have to be a genius, You don't have to solve all the problems and invent new things. Sometimes it is enough to be persistent, observant, and really really good at sharing.

At least, that's how I see it.

Great insight. I am reminded of that quote that goes something like "There's no limit to the great things humans can accomplish if no one cares who gets the credit." And other conversations I've seen earlier tonight about seeing things like a child, without preconceptions, honestly, in order to see what the problem really is.

Your idea also reminds me of how we create the space where collaboration happens – or not. Does the hero approach foster collaboration? Very possibly not! Something to mull over....?

In the really ancient stories of the Welsh people, the Mabingion, often groups of people with unique talents and characteristics are combined in hard times to create a sort of superhero team. I always liked this idea and I think it is reflected in modern DC comics where the combined special powers allow people to do so much more. This is the type of superhero that I endorse one that is fully situated in the context of their own culture and deeply engaged with other people to help sort out whatever immediate issues they can have a positive effect on.

Hi Elizabeth! Love the sentiment! I totally agree and I think changemakers who value personal ambition over the work can sometimes lose sight of what's really important. Creating an impact is of course critical, but the processes used to realize that impact can be just as important too. Thanks for the post, I'm giving a collaboration powervote. :)

I like this. Very wise. Helping someone out of a bad place can make a huge difference to them. And personally, I was in a bad place in one time and didn't even know it, but it took a wonderful individual to help me realize things that were tripping me up. Thanks for posting.

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development.The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
