Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

I've been reading what makes the EVOKE community tick and I'm very fascinated and proud that I'm part of the community.

Now, before I get some beauty sleep (boy work was tough today!), here's something to think about. Let's think about...thinkers.

In India, the top 25% with the highest IQs is greater than the population of the US. That means India has more graduates than US has newborns.

The top 10 in-demand jobs in 2010 did not exist in 2004. (The list includes account directors, medical science liaisons, estimators/project managers in construction) Listen to odeo.com

We are preparing our students for non-existent jobs, technology & problems.

If MySpace were a country, it'd be the 5th most populated nation in the world.

It took 13 years to reach a market audience of 50m users via TV. Using the Internet? 4 years. Using the iPod? 3 years. Facebook? 2 years.

More than 4 exabytes (40000000000000000000) yep, 19 zeroes of unique information was generated in 2009. Greater than the previous 5000 years combined.

The amount of technical information doubles every 2 years. Taking a 4-year degree? That means half of what you learnt will be outdated before you graduate.

So what does all this mean?

We are all living in a different age. If we have a good idea and a good platform..and if people talk about it, we'll get far.

Now we need the thinkers. Engineers, programmers, designers, mathematicians, entrepreneurs and leaders to lead the way into this new decade. Here's some stuff worth sharing.

Michelle Obama's plea for education talks about how every child deserves an education so he/she can learn, think and contribute to the world.

Mae Jemison explains why a child needs to learn the arts and sciences COMBINED. Her idea of constructive & de-constructive thinking makes me reflect on my learning experience so far, especially after I've finished my 'A's in 2007.

Michelle Obama & Mae Jemison

Ultimately, when we hand our legacy to the next generation, they must accept it with the same vision, knowledge and skills that we've left.

Agreed. We are entering a fast pace world. it means things will be very different in ten years.

now we just have to make sure it's the future we want.

+1KS. Well said. Education helps us to develop our attitudes, skills and knowledge to make informed decisions for the benefit of ourselves and others, now and in the future, and to act upon these decisions.

@Omri Thanks! Yep it's a fast paced world, and it's going to be dominated by what users want...it's not "I'll watch the News only at 6.30am with coffee and reading my papers...it's logging onto a network and receiving updates every 10 minutes...and you decide what you want to read or not.

@Shakwei Yes it's for us to be informed, and to understand what's going on...and only by doing so will we make the right decisions.

I too am wondering about evoke. Since I found out about it two days ago, I've made 8 blog posts, almost completed 3 missions, spent over 12 hours on research & learning, & made friends, commenting on posts & powering people up!

Simply put, this game is so exiting because the only pre-resequite is if your evoking, its because you want to be part of & contribute too literally saving the world. I say Evoke beats college any day, with professors & teachers & students & humans all over the world teaching & learning & researching & debating & discussing.

Has there ever been a project that transcends race, culture, gender etc. like this? What will we accomplish, what can't we accomplish? Damn, this game gets me excited!

I like the enthusiasm. I too discovered the game only yesterday.

@a.v. koshy, thanks for your enthusiasm! great to know that there are people in the heart of the community making change :)

@zack stieber, yes this game's exciting and i like the way you took a step back and looked at the bigger picture. the future's user-generated content. we'll share what's we want to share and it's platforms like Evoke where like-minded people share and, eventually, collaborate. that's what I hope to achieve duing this journey here too.

@Omri Licht, great to hear from you and welcome to the community!

Education planners have added 4 "Cs" to the 3 "Rs" to help young learners contribute in the 21st century: critical thinking and problem solving, communication, collaboration, and creativity and innovation. Seems these are skills needed in EVOKE as well. Good post--thank you

Yes, good stuff there! And it's more than just physics, mathematics and economics that will allow us to attain such skills. Throw the kids out, let them experience what it's like to work for $1 a day, live in poverty...and they'll see the urgency of the problem. Let them talk to leaders in our world and beyond to practise communications.

Honestly, what I learnt in my 'A' level days were barely applied when I did my first job as a law enforcement officer. They are all on-the-job skills. So cheerios to you Michele Baron. :)

+1 Vision...
Are any of you familiar with Neil Postman's philosophy on education? I think it has relevance to today's predicament....

Postman suggests rather than teaching individual courses from a modern standpoint (English, math, sciences, history etc), instead taking young students to the historical beginning of those studies in their early lives (grade 1, 2), and to teach them the biggest questions each subject has encountered throughout their educations.

This means no more teaching history by itself. Instead each class is embedded with its own history, its main figures, philosophies and questions asked of it. This way the students won't only understand the modern perspective of this knowledge, but they'll see that each field is always changing and evolving.

If taught this way, students would become more engaged on developing their own theories, and thinking outside of any boxes usually created by the blinders of education. This would certainly contribute to creativity in all fields, and help students to understand their role as question-askers, not just studier/ memorizers.

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
