Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

David Foreman was one of the co-founders of the radical environmentalist group "Earth First!" and is working currently in The Rewilding Institute to try to re-establish a belt of wilderness from North America down through South America. http://library.thinkquest.org/26026/People/dave_foreman.html

Dave Foreman came to my attention a couple of years ago during the Spring Symposium at my college, and I've been looking up his work and the work of those associated with him ever since. I read his book a year ago: Confessions of an Eco-Warrior, and it's written exactly how he speaks: somewhat unstructured, but charismatic and powerful. Besides, it comes with a load of advice for environmental activism.

I'm following him in particular not because I agree with everything he says, or plan to become a radical environmentalist (just plain environmentalist is good with me), but because he inspires me to DO something instead of simply talking about it. He inspires me to internalize my ideas and to externalize the results. He inspires me to howl at the moon every once in a while, and I have to say, I didn't have the voice to do that before.

Unfortunately, I can't seem to find a place to contact him, which does not surprise me one bit. He seems to be outdoors a lot more than on the internet, haha. But I did favorite a video on Youtube with one of his stories that he's so famous for telling, and I'm doing everything I can to send an email to The Rewilding Institute.

interesting about environmentalist, do you not think that environmentalists are inherently radical ?

Adam Sunman - I don't think so. Or at least, I think the American ones are a little more radically inclined than the rest. But maybe that's an elitist attitude; I've been noticing lately that environmentalism from developed countries is trying to impose itself on undeveloped and developing countries, and that causes major problems regarding economy and future development. It's almost as if the developed world is trying to claim exclusive rights to development, but the goals are simply clashing.

a.v. - Yeah, he is very cool. I was too afraid to talk to him when I saw him at the Spring Symposium, because I'm a silly insignificant person, and he was a giant to me.

Same thing with Vandana Shiva, (who I will be writing about next) who came to the Headwaters program last semester. She's a GODDESS, and I was intimidated.

I'm extremely impressed with Vandana Shiva's work with the collective commons. She's a visionary, and I hope I get to see some more work from her real soon. Have you read her book "Earth Democracy?"

I think you have to be overtly radical in America to have a voice on the political stage. The political climate in the US means that environmental campaigners have to be different to be heard.

we have a belt of wilderness in the ex-dmz between east and west germany... is it similar to the american project you wish for?

Adam - 'Tis true, 'tis true. It's fairly difficult to break beyond the bipartisan dichotomy as well, and between the Democrats and the Republicans, there's really no platform for the environmentalists can stand on. They've tried to squeeze their way into the Democratic party, as a fringe, but the Democrats are less interested in the environment as they are in immediate social problems. And the Republicans are much more concerned with economic success than the environment too, so there's no room for them there either.

founded deep ecology ? yeah I have. what I'm suggesting though is the inherent radicalism in environmentalism though, rather than differing between environmentalists and radicals. - By wanting change to the situation to better the environment are you not definition a radical ?

@Alyssa, I think theirn lies the problem, Americans have the choice of one party backed by, and expecting return from corporations, or another, which is exactly the same, but with slightly different conservative values. - Having spent a long time discussing this for a University paper, This would actually be beneficial to environmentalism. Once people start buying into green technologies (a lot of eco-products are prospering within silicon valley) those companies will be embowered and be able to buy government in the same way that immoral companies do now,

The very thing that corrupts US politics will be the thing to draw it into more responsible and moral legislation. Iron triangles like the military industrial complex will be thrown off in favour of a more environmental and peaceful agenda.

Jan - I think the proposal in The Rewilding proposal is a bit bigger than that, but I'm having a hard time getting to the website to find out. I hope the proposal hasn't been discontinued. That would break my heart.

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
