I an so blessed to have a wife who helps and supports in me in providing healthy and well rounded meals for our children. Every now and again we spoil with sweets or something greasy, but generally they always get the proper portions. We as a family do everything we can to minimize waste, eating small meals through out the day and maximizing the nutritional intake every time! If you eat good, you feel good and have more energy to do other things to promote positive self image such as playing sports or having the energy to give back to the community, Helping out with the largely successful GYvers program my cohort Terry and i started at a local YMCA just about 10 years ago helps us to teach not only our families but our communities on healthy living and minimizing food waste. Free cla**** for the community on how to shop on a budget and pick the healthiest foods possible and providing many opportunities for youth and the community to volunteer and gave back to their community, Its hard to imagine invoking this idea together just about 10 years ago, perhaps some big celebration and something really special needs to be done now..... perhaps trying to exapnd the program out of Canada, or leaving Canada and trying to give some first hand help, show up somewhere in need role up the sleeves and ask "what needs to be done"?
For starters GYvers is powered by people, something that has been around for thousands of years and their is no indication of that stopping. Powered by empowered people, people who have a thirst for knowledge and drive to learn and a passion for success. Even if something or someone fails pick our selves back up and trying something new and trying till it works. Our main source of power at the YMCA is wind power as the massive lethbridge winds are able to sustain large amounts of power, not to mention the new local focus on using power in the most effiencent ways possible sleeping or turning off computers after use, proper insulation in homes, and using the natural heat and cold of nature to provide the bulk of temperature change in the home.
