A crash course in changing the world.
The Centre has evolved from
its early focus on land claims and historical research to its current acclaimed
work on sustainable development and the environment. Through the Centre's
effective practices, Walpole Island has become one of the first Aboriginal
communities in Canada to take a leadership role in this area. In 1995, the
Walpole Island First Nation received the "We the Peoples: 50 Communities
Award" from the Friends of the United Nations for its exemplary record in
environmental research and sustainable development. The Centre uses
community-based research and decision-making. This allows the Walpole Island
First Nation to sustain its cultural heritage and traditional ecological
knowledge and, at the same time, interact effectively with the non-indigenous
population. "Times New Roman";mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman";color:#003300"">
