Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

Women's Health Forum / Affinity Group

After watching evidence videos (like LifeWrap video and Reproductive Rights in the Philippines among others) and reading posts (like Yumna's on Dr. Suellen Miller), a group of us decided to join together to take action.

This space will serve as a place for those of us interested in women's health: reproductive health, maternal health, and human rights.

We want to make a difference in the lives of women around the world. Feel free to join us as we brainstorm, organize our ideas, and mobilize to create change.

Women around the world face obstacles and challenges to live healthy lives:

"While women and men share many similar health challenges, the differences are such that the health of women deserves particular attention. Women generally live longer than men because of both biological and behavioural advantages. But in some settings, notably in parts of Asia, these advantages are overridden by gender-based discrimination so that female life expectancy at birth is lower than or equal to that of males.

Moreover, women’s longer lives are not necessarily healthy lives. There are conditions that only women experience and whose potentially negative impact only they suffer. Some of these – such as pregnancy and childbirth – are not diseases, but biological and social processes that carry health risks and require health care. Some health challenges affect both women and men,but have a greater or different impact on women and so require responses that are tailored specifically to women’s needs. Other conditions affect women and men more or less equally, but women face greater difficulties in getting the health care they need. Furthermore, genderbased inequalities – for example in education, income and employment – limit the ability of girls and women to protect their health."

Ohh! Here's an interesting policy paper put out by the WHO on vertical (stand alone program interventions) versus horizontal (broader more multi-disciplinary systems development) approaches: http://www.euro.who.int/doc**ent/HSM/5_hsc08_epb_8.pdf. They lay out a pretty interesting debate! (Though I would challenge some of the things they say, such as the limited evidence of horizontal health strategies efficacy. While it is true that there's limited evidence, there's also been very little funding directed towards these types of interventions, so less of them exist.)

Yeah seriously, Shawkei, thanks for sharing this. You are so full of helpful resources!

Yumna, I had a chance to go through most of the website you sent. It looks like such amazing work! I didn't notice where it talked about the work relating to women's health. Is there a page that I missed? If so, could you point me there? If there's not, would you be willing to tell us a bit more about that (either in a comment or a post)? (I'm particularly interested in the way the reproductive/maternal health services overlap with the education program.) It looks like such a wonderful initiative and a great framework for us to be innovation in. Thanks for bringing it up! :)

@Jenn: there isn't a specific women's health programme. however, at the evening clinics, most of the patients are women. so, it's an opportunity in terms of promotion/prevention activities. also, the other big strength of SHAWCO is that we have manpower. every year there are over 1500 student volunteers wanting to do something good.

I see, that makes a lot of sense. What makes more sense in terms of fitting in to what you do - a prevention program that gets integrated into the doctor-patient intervention or a stand-alone program? Also, what is the referral system like? Would you say that doctors in your program know a lot about / are connected in to other resources these women can access, or that that might be something we could use Evoke to help out with?

You make a great point about "manpower." I think medical students and doctors have not only the ability to do amazing grassroots work like you all are, but because doctors hold such a respected place in the community, they also have the ability to add power in terms of solidarity to other movements. A great and not too difficult way that I think could add innovation (and maybe this already happens) would be to encourage your volunteers to attend and engage in other movements. (rallies, protests, advocacy measures of other groups, etc.) This way the amazing health work that you all do continues, but we also throw some weight into addressing more of the root causes of poor health more comprehensively. It's one of those things where you're already doing so much (addressing health and education, wow!), but challenging folks in this way could be good, too. :)

Let me know what you think! I'm excited. :)

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
