Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

EVOKE is proving to be quite a challenge! The first part of this mission was hard enough, but the second is even more difficult.

Just how do you pick one person from the millions who are out there making a real difference?

I went back to basics and started with where I find my inspiration: literature. My mind almost immediately jumped to the perfect person for shadowing; Xue Xinran.

Xinran is an author and journalist originally from Beijing in North China, who has written several books about the Chinese based upon her personal experiences.

As a journalist working for Radio Nanjing Xinran discovered and brought to light the stories of ordinary women in her groundbreaking and controversial radio programme, Words on the Night Breeze. Any female listener could contact Xinran with a letter or phone call and share her story with the entire country. They did - in their thousands. Xinran shared the amazing stories that came to light in her first book, The Good Women of China, which will always be one of my favourites.

Xinran also founded the charity Mother's Bridge of Love to help British families with adopted Chinese children to understand the culture their children have come from - http://www.mothersbridge.org/.

What inspires me so much about Xinran is her sheer determination to make voices heard that wouldn't be so otherwise, especially in a country which has yet so far to go before it can be called truly open.

I was overjoyed to discover Xinran has a blog - http://www.xinranbooks.co.uk/blog/ - which I will be following.

Xinran sounds like an amazing woman. Thank you for this post :) Have you thought about contacting her in person - she could be a powerful mentor to you and to others on EVOKE?

I'm not sure how to get in contact with her, I will keep looking though :)

Facebook only brings up her fan page, which I don't think she runs herself. I would guess the only way to contact her is through her publisher, or maybe her blog.

Her books are very good - harrowing, even shocking in some parts, but they tell a lot about the nature of humanity and the level of insight into the Chinese mind she brings is invaluable. I'd recommend them to everyone. There's a new book of hers out there which I haven't read yet, China Witness, which I must look up.

Yes I saw :) I've had a browse through already!

Mhm I get the feeling there hasn't been much attention spent to her blog recently, though in the past it looks like that was a direct way of contacting Xinran. Thank you though!!!

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
