Serendipity versus Spam

My EVOKE inbox has 79 messages. All of these go to my regular email address too (I know, I can change that setting, but then I'll miss the ones I DO want to see). I understand, and patiently tolerate, people's need to drive others to their posts by sending out messages to their entire friends network, or worse, to the the wh*** community -- I know I get messages from people not on my friends list.

I want to speak up for the value of personal connection, but even more, for…

Episode 3 and the Concept of Failure

In the Episode 3 discussion ( http://www.urgentevoke.com/forum/topics/episode-3-story-did-the-evoke ), there seems to be a majority of people that want to take the term 'fail' out of our vocabulary; many arguments against EVOKE having failed thus far are generalizable to all instances of what would otherwise be called failure - eg: there cannot have been a failure in light of the fact that something can be… Continue

EVOKE PR Group. Let´s use Media and Celebities

We live in a reality where celebrities and media shape the way so many people view the World. This is far from ideal, but that´s contemporary life. I think we should use the existing media and celebrity structures and bring some attention to the issues the EVOKE Network is working on and we will be working on after the 10 weeks.

I am sure because I´ve seen it that there is a lot of talented people with highly developed social and networking skills. We need a group of people that are… Continue

Conflict In My EVOKE??

Accusations, attempts to game the system, and name calling have been finding their way into my EVOKE email box via mass mailings. I really thought that my fellow EVOKE agents would be above this sort of thing. In a game designed to bring people together to solve problems I find the idea of petty clique creation repulsive. Don't we have enough factions and cliques in the real world preventing the creation of solid, sustainable solutions to critical problems? The relationships we are building… Continue

Internet Access in Rural Africa

In follow up to my last post on African participation in Evoke, I came across an article on the BBC - Nigerian web first-timers long to be 'part of the world'. In the story, the journalist Komla Dumor travels to rural Nigeria, asks people about the internet, and doc**ents the experience of 2 men as they interact with the WWW for the first time. It is… Continue

Building Trust

This is a response to agent Ed Dragar's challenge. I'd like to add to what he and others have already said.

Something that is key, I think, is engaging with one another -- reading (or viewing) each… Continue

Learn2: What Rio Can Learn from Food Shortage Prevention on the Island of Kauai

Kauai is an island in the state of Hawaii susceptible to hurricanes and tidal waves. In 1992 before I arrived here there was a category 5 (really big) hurricane called Iniki that devastated the island with sustained 150 mile per hour winds for several days. The hurricane basically hovered over Kauai island for a long time. Crops were destroyed, chicken coops were upended, and homes were roofless. It took years to rebuild. There was some issue with food shortage in the aftermath of the…

Zimbabwe Update for Learn2: Bread for Gold?

My older brother sent me an email about Zimbabwe's financial situation last year. I don't know the latest on this, but I saw a video that really affected me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ubJp6rmUYM

What our quest in areas of food shortage doesn't emphasize is the relationship between agriculture and economics in Zimbabwe.

Can you imagine spending ten hours a day with a hand-sized hoe or a small basket searching…

The green-centric approach to development

I wonder if all the 10 weeks of EVOKE will be green-centric. Be 10 stories about food, eco-village, plants, harvests, corn types, food, flowers, seeds, and - did I mention food?

Don't get me wrong: I also see the importance of these issues. But I also think that development has many other aspects.

Development also has a political side. International agreements - something which EVOKE in the two episodes of the comic seem to reject. To EVOKE,…

What happened to the African players?

I've been looking at the leader board the past few days - watching new names climb and other names fall. This is a game, right? The points tell us when people have read our thoughts and seen our videos and pictures. At the same time, this isn't a game. This is a social networking platform in cyberspace. A place where global distances and time zones cease to exist, but people and relationships and the knowledge we share could really matter… Continue

Can a game like this really change the world?

I made a new friend tonight. She sent me a message that I wish I could give her a SPARK vote for. She asked me the question "Can a game like this really change the world?" This got me thinking...here was my response to her:

All it takes to change the world is to change the thinking of one person. Each and every person on here has heard the call to participate

and in doing so, each person involved is changing. These… Continue

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

It is 7'oclock, I was late home from work due to an assignment that i wanted to get ahead on. By the time I get home I am feeling extremley tired and I cannot be bothered to make a proper meal. I walk to the fridge and open it to see what there is for me to eat. All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
