THINK6 - Land grabbing in Mozambique

I was going through the WomenWatch, and this story caught my attention. The story was about land grabbers; residents who claim land after the passing of someone else. It's really hard to sum it up into one sentence, so allow be to elaborate.
Women and children around the world still don't have safety to their property; it can be taken away from them at a moment's notice, and it has. Take Mozambique for example. It's one of the poorest countries in the world, so some drastic measures are…

Kenya's farmers losing out from volcanic ash

I mentioned in my previous post the impact on food exporting nations from there being no air travel around Europe. There's a story on the Guardian website indicating that around 10-15 t of freight usually comes to Europe from Kenya each day, and the lack of flights is costing $1.3 M a day.…

The root of all evil?

Money is commonly defined as medium that can be exchanged for goods and services and is used as a measure of their value on the market. Money makes it easier to trade, borrow, save, invest, and compare the value of goods and services.

Money has value only because we, humans have dictated that. A piece of colored paper with the picture of another (usually dead) human being has no value in itself. Money does not create inequality - humans do. Sound reasonable doesn’t…

Nyaoga Village Clean Water Project

I chose project for two almost superficial reasons: firstly, they have an amazing website (http://cleanwaterproject.net) which is quite unusual for a non-profit volunteer organisation. secondly, the group that runs the project is called Give Us Wings and I think this is a notion that all 'aid' related organisations could take note of - the point is not to fly people around, but rather to give them wings to fly themselves through… Continue

Toilet 'malls' in Kenya!

While researching I discovered an African organisation called Ecotact, one of Ashoka's partners. This project won a $200,000 prize in 2009 in the Changemakers/Global Water Challenge Contest for its work in Nairobi, Kenya. Ecotact works in both urban and rural situations to solve water and sanitation issues.

Ecotact's unique… Continue

Too Much v/s Not Enough

In 2006, the United Nations said it expected Africa to be the continent most affected by climate change, not because it produces a large amount of greenhouse gases - quite the opposite - but because it is the least equipped to cope with change.

2007-2009

The rains have failed in Kenya since 2007 resulting in a prolonged drought with over 10 million people needing food aid. Drought is a normal, recurring feature of the climate in most parts of the world. It…

Kajiado Shallow Wells Project

As the mission brief summarized, the 3 most urgent consequences of the water crisis are water-related disease and death, lost time and potential and wasted resources. Clearly then when addressing water issues, one needs to look not only at access to clean water but also issues of proximity to the water source as well as sanitation. This is an area that AMREF has been working on and perhaps I am (just a tad) biased in choosing…

LEARN2: Kenya's Dilemma

Agent Shakwei Mbindyo posed a question for us all here: should smallholders in African countries grow food to export to Europe? In her comment Agent Jen Shaffer expanded the question: she knows that many African nations export flowers to Europe. Are either one of these, or both, a good idea for Kenya and Kenyans? Shakwei asks, does "food miles" or other environmental concerns make this a… Continue

Ken Eklund 2020 IMAGINE 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 and 10

ONE and TWO

It’s March 10, 2020. I’m 62 years old. I’m inoculating wood mulch with Pleurotus spawn in the cool dampness of a cave, a welcome relief from the heat outside. It’s strangely calming to think like a mushroom spore, to let each microscopic bit fall where it has the best chance to awaken and grow.

This cave is a hundred years old. It was dug by hand to store wine casks, back when… Continue

Impact of climate change on Kenya.

The change in global temperatures has led to change in the local weather patterns; this has great impact on our environment. The change in weather patterns has resulted to the melting of ice in Mt.Kenya, in the last few decades the once snow capped mountain has reduced its

volume of ice. The Mau and the Aberdare forest have not being spared either due…

ACT1: Alfie Kohn

The root of most problems are education and poverty. How do we educate in the face of poverty? Alfie Kohn is a social innovator because he has the courage to show why conventional schooling systems (like in the US) are broken. I wouldn't call him a hero -- that's just Evoke's silly video game rhetoric -- but he understands children and learning so clearly and explains his views clearer than any social activist or researcher I've ever seen. To me, what he is talking about is not just about… Continue

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

It is 7'oclock, I was late home from work due to an assignment that i wanted to get ahead on. By the time I get home I am feeling extremley tired and I cannot be bothered to make a proper meal. I walk to the fridge and open it to see what there is for me to eat. All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
