Power Shift

Copenhagen as the cycling city is a great example for reducing emissions. It would be awesome if there was a way to somehow collect the energy that is produced while riding the bike so you could use it for example to charge personal electronic devices. I think that more people would be motivated to take the bike if they basically can make money with it.

hybrid wind turbine

I picked Bernd Melchior for the solar-wind turbine. He is making a hybrid, vertical-axis wind turbine coated with flexible solar panels. The wind turbine is shaped like a corkscrew for maximum surface area (Meaning more wind power and more solar panels) and can turn in winds 4-90mph (6.4-144.8kmph.)

The missing link to renewable energy

My role model is Donald Robert Sadoway

Donald Robert Sadoway is the current John F. Elliott Professor of Materials Chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

A faculty member in the Department of Materials Science Engineering, he is a noted expert on batteries and has done significant research on how to improve the performance and longevity of portable power sources.

In This video he explains how to bridge the gap between renewable energy and storing of…

"You party like you always do, but here it will be better for the earth."

I chose the Dutch nightclub "Club Watt" in Rotterdam which is one of the first or maybe even the first sustainable nightclub in the world. The special thing about it is, that every step and every movement of the people dancing produces energy which is transformed into electricity (due to the piezoelectric effect). This electricity is used to power the light show which mainly consists of LEDs or low-energy bulbs. In Addition, the toilet flushing is done with rainwater and the guests are…

Using the energy of the ocean

The usage of the power of the ocean is becoming more an more important, because of its big theoretical potential. There were built several test facicities worldwide in which the alternative concepts of earning energy from the ocean. At the moment there are two different approaches of realizing this. One is the Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion in which the temperature diffenrence between cold and warm water is used. There is a difference of about 20 degrees between the water on the top of the…

Power Shift

I found an interessting dancefloor in Rotterdam. The club is called "Club Watt" and has a dancefloor which produces electricity from the movement of the dancing people. With each person they can produce 20 watt, wihich reduces the need of energy by 30 %. They also have solutions for theri garbage and water consumption. Inventer of this dancefloor is Dan Roosegaarde.

Here's a video about the innovative floor:…

African Sustainable house

Several years ago my parents once worked on a project of the INEP-Institute gGmbH called "African Sustainable House". The project was about building houses to sustain itself with heat and energy supply in Africa. It uses solar panels to generate the required energy. Additionally, it is designed so that it achieves a low energy consumption.

Check out these links to get more information:…

Take me to the farthest shore

Building offshore wind turbines pose several engineering challenges due to the demanding environmental conditions. But offshore turbines produce more electricity because the winds tend to flow at higher speeds than onshore winds. It's a great chalange to build those wind turbines but software such as MD Adams and MD Nastran, developed by MSC Software, helps to simulate the complex physics.…

Power Shift

The company "Renewit" creates many different versions of their solar panel technology to power different object such as cell phones, lights, computers, etc. These technologies are open to everyone, but the company strives to distribute it to places like sub-saharan Africa that don't usually have any power. These are very unique technologies because they are small, therefore very easy to use and convenient to transport. The photo below is one example of the products made by Renewit:…

Tornado Power Plant!

On the website http://vortexengine.cavortexengine i found an interesting idea about to use the energy of tornado as an effective renewable source of energy.

Tornadoes are among natures most powerful and destructive forces. In fact, tornadoes have the highest energy density of any storm in nature.

Canadian engineer Louis Michaud believes he has figured a…

war or biohydrogen?

Two years ago I attended a seminar at HTWK Leipzig (University) regarding a special technology in the field of regenerative energies. We discussed about how biohydrogen in connection with fuel cells can solve the problem of shortage of fossil fuels.

Using that technology would change our everyday life in Europe dramatically. We would use biohydrogen, which is produced in local bio-power plants and our existing gas pipelines to serve every household. At each home we could generate…

Fusion Energy our own Sun

The best energy sources we know are stars like our sun. And it still is the most used energy source on the earth, even if the energy was stored in other lings like oil, coal gas or even plants.

We are already using these kind of energy so why not get a step further and create our own sun. The first theories were developed in the early 20 century. The same theories were also used to create more powerful weapons, but that is something science always had to deal with. Sadly, the peaceful…

Solar: Not Just For Tinfoil-Hatters Anymore

California has been on the solar cutting edge before. In the 1980s, the state produced 95 percent of the world’s solar power. One company, LUZ International, designed solar thermal power plants and managed to reduce the price of generating a solar kilowatt hour of power by two-thirds between 1984 and 1989.

But by 1991, LUZ was bankrupt. The problem wasn’t the technology: LUZ’s plants are still gleaming away in Kramer Junction and Harper Lake for the utility NextEra Energy Resources.…

LEARN3 - Mission 3: Who else is inventing creative, sustainable ways to power our everyday lives?

Basic facts about India's electricity supply

More than 65% of India's population lives in the countryside which contains more than 60 000 villages. Many of them are situated in rugged terrain and inaccessible locations. This is the reason why most of these remote villages are not connected to the national electric power grid. Some villages have a very irregular electricity supply whereas other villages have no electricity at all.

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
