This is an undeveloped idea that may or may not be practical depending on the power output, but either way, hopefully it will spark some discussion and/or new ideas.
So my thought is that many power systems are run by what is known as a "gradient." An example of this is geothermal energy which utilizes the temperature difference (aka the temp gradient) present between the surface of the planet and the earth beneath the surface. Water or some other fluid is pumped into the…

Here is something to keep an eye on: solar powered clothing
Okay, okay, this one is bit weird, but the advance of bendable solar panels does help one thing of ways to put the solar panels onto/into clothing so that we can generate power. Is it inexpensive -- definitely not.

I was thinking about all power usages we are using and how can I reduce this usage and save energy.
When I was a child it was all so new using electricity that commercial were saying “Use more Electricity…

I decided not to look at my direct power use but actually at the indirect power use through food that I use to power myself. I can't even imagine how much power it costs to transport food all over the world or to grow it in greenhouses. Or the unsustainability of meat-eating (1 kilo of meet needs 10 kilo of plants, in terms of how much an animal has to eat, not even naming the waste production of animals).
So I will start to eat meat just once a week (still once a week for…

Apparently, engineers at Princeton are developing a new flexible sensor that stores the mechanical energy from normal human activities such as walking and dancing. It's a tiny thing that can be placed on the bottom of one's shoe in such a way as to be bent and rounded with every step, so that just walking or running can produce the…

Looking around my little desk, 4 different little electronic devices stare up at me: a cell phone, digital camera and two music players. I love these little gadgets and almost everyone I know also have their own arsenal of personal electronic devices. The downside is always how much juice these things use up! How many times have you called someone on their cell and left a message expecting them to get back to you in due time, only to hear back from them more than a day later saying their…

Sound energy is generally very small in scope, so is not often thought of as an alternate energy source, but hopefully this won't sound too terribly silly. After all, my proposal is to power something very small with the sound from a highway. Sound energy could conceivably be used to turn the noise from the road to something helpful instead of pollution. There are people who live near airports and busy roads that could capture sound energy from sensors... hypothetically. The energy captured…

A few years ago, an australian miner told me over a few beers that he did not like being a miner and that he just 'did it for the money'. That was kind of funny, because this fellow looked like he was built to be either a miner or a professional wrestler (he later told me his real passion lay with writing short stories - which is tough if you spend your time working in a copper mine).
Because I knew Australia to be a very coal-dependent country, the conversation quickly turned to the…

I found several interesting projects or companies, but I'm still doing research. There's just so much out there to learn! Here are a few that I wanted to highlight first:
VoltreeVoltree Power has created a
Bioenergy Harvester that changes plant energy into electricity. It is mostly used in "mesh networks," where small amounts of power are needed over very large…

living in Portland most of my power comes from the hydro electric dams that line the Columbia river. these dams have destroyed fish habitat and making salmon fry easy targets for predators. when i was in kindergarten i had the obvious solution: "we have to blow up the lights!" i said. when asked why i said: "because it kills salmon!"
Bonneville dam was built by the army Corp of Engineers during the new deal along with several other dams. among the many people provided work by this…

Wind is something that can be found everywhere. Unlike water, fire, or oil; wind is even in places where it is not considered to be windy. Up, higher than the wind turbines go the wind currents are present and power full Saul Griffith has started to look into and designing kites that could be use to harness the energy from these currents. This is teh TED video where he explaines this

Appropriately, I am shadowing a light.
Solar Sister is an organization dedicated to bringing simple, solar-powered light to women and girls in rural Africa. This by-women, for-women service means things like:
- Girls don't miss out on study time. As they normally attend to domestic chores after school, unlike their brothers who do their school assignments immediately when they get home from school, so the girls fall behind in school and…
