We use doors all the time. They're on buildings, cars, and even refrigerators. We may think nothing of doors as we push them aside, however, we should stop and consider doors as a way to gather electricity. By placing a simple generator on the hinges of commonly used doors, we make a lot of power. Imagine a busy mall; customers constantly come in and out as they finish their shopping. Each time they pushed on a door, they would create a small electric current. All of these pushes would…

Although Missouri is the gateway to the west; one of the biggest corn producers in the world, we still cannot meet all of our food needs. Because of job loss and the damaged economy, many food banks in Missouri are becoming overwhelmed. Families that used to be able to support themselves are no longer able to put food on the table. Two thousand new families recently started coming to the food pantry in Boone County. These people have never needed food assistance before.
Now…

The average American soaks up about 1,189 gallons of water a day. When I read this fact I thought,
Surely I can't use that much water! In order to test myself, I tried the
water calculator web site. The calculator asked questions about my life style, then tallied up how much water I use. Once all of my data was imputed, I was shocked to find that on an average day, I use near 1,300 gallons! I realized that without the water…

The sun had finally set, and our plane came down over the runway. We all hastily exited the plane that we had been sitting in for the past twelve hours. As we entered the air port, we were greeted by a wave of heat. My group sat down and we all started to fill out our forms. When we had answered all of the questions asked by the customs officer, he told us, "Welcome to India."
My school trip to India was an amazing, eye opening experience. We drove through the…

Jessica Lin had an idea -use a soccer ball as a way to power lights in a small African village. With the help of three other Harvard students, she made her dream into a reality...
The Soccket ball has a generator inside of it that creates electricity when it is kicked or rolled. By playing for 15 minuets, children can power a light bulb for three hours! Jessica realized that every second of the day we spend…

As I peeled off the wrapper from my meal, a cloud of steam billowed out. The tray had canned corn, tasteless chicken fingers, and a brownie that had grown to large when it was heated. It smelled like most of the other meals I was eating then: full of salt and fat, nothing else. Closing the microwave back shut, I walked into the dining room. When I entered, everyone else was already seated. As I sat down, we all started our dinners. The plastic…

I suppose it may sound selfish, but when Evoke asked me to improve the food safety of one person I knew, I started with myself. This year, I have begun work on a
small herb garden. It started with my step father packing potting soil into plastic cups. When I went out to see what he was doing, he handed me a packet of seeds.
My brother and I have now planted ten-or-so trays of plants. We've created a spot in our garage by the window for the plants to get light. We…

The Water Project:
Lack of clean water is a serious problem around the world. Today, nearly one billion people still do not have access to clean, safe drinking water. The contaminated water they are forced to drink is often unsafe. Every minuet, seven people die from either dirty water, or none at all. The Water Project works by going into developing countries and providing them with clean water. Their mission statement is, "For too…

In all truthfulness, there is no way that I can predict where I will be in 10 years; or what I will be doing. There are so many possibilities open to me, and so many doors to chose from. Perhaps I will still be in school, or maybe I will be preparing for my first job. It is impossible to tell. However, there is one thing that I hope to be doing. By the year 2020, I plan to be making real-world changes. I want to be using my skills in whatever passion I follow to help the world. Whether I write…

While I read through the list of social innovators, one program stood out to me: Energize Clinton County. The founders were Taylor Stuckert and Mark Rembert, and their message was simple: To re-energize Clinton County by offering public policy, networking, and social entrepreneurial ideas and solutions.…

Imagine a world with no cash. There would be no more dirty pennies, no more lose change, and no more piggy banks. Whenever you wanted to make a purchase, you would just type in your password or scan your eye. It would be as easy as that. However, with any advancement comes a price, and some are heavier than others. Without a doubt, changing to electronic currency would not only affect the way we buy things. Electric, or "plastic" money could change the entire way we live our…
