A crash course in changing the world.
The event that I want to organize intended to capture the world’s attention in the World Water Day consists on inviting citizens all over the planet to “contribute” with one or two empty plastic water bottles that they may have bought lately. We will use media coverage to persuade people to bring their bottles to a location (main square, the beach, a camping lot, etc) where we will collect the bottles and form a pile with them.
The event intends to have a great effect in both developed and developing countries, as plastic bottles constitute a global issue.
One year to go, many things to prepare:
The virtual version of this campaign is being designed by a group of old friends that I met 10 years ago while we were Evoking. This team is developing a web page where you will check in the number of water bottles that you currently have or you have used in the past 30 days. Participants will be able to see -for every country- the virtual bottle pile growing as more people visit the web page.
This exercise will allow us to get consciousness of how much waste we produce and that we can reduce the negative impact by making a better decision at the time of consuming water.
Our reasons:
In 2011 the right to water and sanitation was finally recognised by the OHCHR and included as an article in the UDHR.
Water supply is not for free, 5 years ago governments decided to charge for it as they found out that this was the only way to ensure that people would save and optimize the use of water. It is also important to point out that this was the first time in the history of earth that all representatives at a summit voted in favour of implementing any sustainable measure worldwide......The first unified agreement ever!
For the last two reasons, these days most people on earth have access to safe drinking water, there is no logic to buy bottled water anymore.
We want people to understand that paying for bottled water is increasing the damage, making our global problems bigger as plastic pollutes our water sources making it difficult to provide enough safe water to the entire population.
We want to convince people to consume bottled water only under very desperate circ**stances such as distribution of safe water during the first 5 days following a catastrophe.
At collecting points we will display pictures of our seas that are polluted with plastic waste.
We will specially bring these events to a beach, because youngsters love to party on the sand, which is perfect, regretfully they leave so much waste at the end of the party for the tide to sweep the garbage to the seas.
My mother suggested that we could keep a surprise for the end of the day: to give awards to those cities which collected the smallest bottle piles. I bet many tiny villages in Africa and the Amazonas Forest will receive this award and get motivated to remain that green.
Contributions very welcome:
I would be happy to collect from all of you ideas & contributions to improve this project, as we actually have less than one year!
