Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

I decided to present the EVOKE manifesto of 2020 in the form of four Haiku poems.

A wise man said -
"Be the change you want to see."
Do this together.

All over our world -
visionaries and doers,
come to act the change

Know what's right -
do that which is good and
therefore be happy

Invite mystery -
entice humanity's will
to make a stand

For all you Haiku nerds out there I have to add that my poems are far from technical perfection. Depending on your definition of "mora" I might be accused of having the wrong number. I lack the traditional "kigo" and my "kireji" leave much to wish for.

The two questions of "understanding the absolute right" and "doing what is good" are separate. As for the first question I think Immanuel Kant might be the one who have come closest to answering this when defining his "Categorical Imperative". These consisted of a number of "rules" of which the most prominent in my opinion are::

"Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law"

"Act in such a way that you treat humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of any other, never merely as a means to an end, but always at the same time as an end."

"Therefore, every rational being must so act as if he were through his maxim always a legislating member in the universal kingdom of ends."

There are other writers, thinkers and philosophers that have formulated similar statements throughout the years, but Kant is very clear.

Now, for the second question, I think "doing what is good" is, contrary to the "absolute right" highly context dependent and almost pragmatic. It is what we have been doing in our Evokes so far. It is about understanding the complexity of a given situation, identifying the problems and contributing to its solution.

So how does one know that they are "understanding the complexity of a given situation, identifying the problems and contributing to its solution"? What is the evidence that this is actually happening, rather than us being deluded into thinking it's happening (but isn't)?

And following your deferment to Kant's "Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law", I'd say that the only universal law I can think of that I'd want to be (and is) true is:

Be who you are, and do what you do.

And I've come to that conclusion because while I used to think I was smarter than reality, I realized that I really wasn't. :-) The universe is amazing, and there's no way on Earth I know enough to second guess reality in knowing what should happen.

The evidence of "this actually happening" is nothing else than an honest attempt to understand the complexity while including as many people as possible in the process (thus maximizing the possible input). If we come that far before suggesting and implementing a solution, we come a fair bit, wouldn't you say?

What Kant meant was more that you should act so that your actions can be regarded as a universal law, this in the sense that if everyone did the same, it would still work fine.

And I agree, the only thing we can ever understand, is that we don't understand anything really.

I'm still not clear what you mean. How do we know something is an honest attempt to understand complexity? What evidence is there to show that it's honest. Or, possibly more easily defined, what would be a "dishonest" attempt to understand complexity?

And how do we know we've included as many people as possible? For example, would you say EVOKE did that? If so, then why are there only a very small number of people participating in the game (and even fewer actively doing stuff here)?

An "honest attempt" could also be defined as a serious attempt or an attempt behind which is put some effort (i.e not taking the most convenient, but rather the most likely more rewarding route).

"Including as many people as possible" simply means not limiting yourself and always strive to hear what more people have to say, to invite different groups and individuals to the process and striving to reflect this in the output.
EVOKE is an attempt at doing this, but we need to take it many steps further, us as agents in how we go about "solving" our missions, and EVOKE network in how they invite and involve people.

OK, I'll try a different tactic, since I'm still not seeing any concrete ideas about evidence. Who decides whether an attempt is serious or have some effort?

Also, as far as Evoke is concerned, how to you feel about the censorship that has gone on? (I've been censored by another player, and other players have been censored by the admins of the game.)

Aha, now I see where you're heading.

I don't think anyone should decide whether an attempt is serious or not. EVOKE shouldn't be a competition. Instead, agents should be encouraged to put this kind of effort into their evidence, since it is the actions associated with the evidence that actually create changes in the real world.

As for the censorship, I have not been subjected to it directly but only come across it in other agents conversations, but seeing as it is the World Bank that is behind it, I am not all that surprised. The freedom of speech aspect needs to be addressed clearly if we (and the initiators behind EVOKE) are serious in taking this project one step further

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
