In my introductory Cultural Anthropology class, we have a unit in which we discuss the ways that people make a living in different kinds of cultures around the world: foraging, pastoralism, horticulture, intensive agriculture, mechanized agriculture. I intend to begin including a section at the end of these discussions concerning the problems caused by our industrial food production methods and the growing food crises in the global economy. This is a natural place to include these issues in the course. While this may not be directly improving the food security of "at least one individual," I should be able to get about 100 young people a year to seriously consider these issues. If there was an assignment similar to this one, it could even have a substantial impact. Fortunately, on our campus, there is a woman whose expertise is in these matters, so I am sure she would be willing to help me put together such a class or perhaps even guest lecture on occasion. We don't talk about these problems nearly enough.
