One Day Without Shoes, April 8th

Amongst the frenzy that is going on here on EVOKE, I ask you, my fellow EVOKEians to please join me tomorrow, Thursday, April 8th, for one day without shoes. It will be something not only to indirectly bring our community together, but it will also give you the opportunity to make a difference.

One day without shoes is hosted by TOMS shoes. If you don't know about the company already, please read my very first blog post. It was about the founder, Blake Mycoskie. This day is one on which to raise awareness about the various problems that people around the world are facing simply because they do not have shoes.

Rahul put a great video up that is from TOMS shoes about a 100% preventable disease called podoconiosis. It can be found here: http://www.urgentevoke.com/video/preventing-podoconiosis

I urge you to join me on this day, whether it be for the entire day or only a few hours. Please take a few moments to visit TOMS website and learn a little bit more about it, and when someone asks you why you are not wearing shoes, you can give them an educated answer, and put a lot of meaning behind your actions.

Thanks.

If you do decide to take part, please share pictures here as evidence! I would love to see people getting involved :)

Hi Turil,

Cold is definitely bad, and broken glass can be a pain too. But on the other hand, your feet evolved over millions of years to deal with sharp sticks under the snow. You may be surprised at how resilient you become with a little practise.

Part of the joy of walking barefool is that you also become more aware of where you're walking. You learn to think about each step, to respond to the surface you're walking on. I suggest learning Taiji too, but only if you can find a teacher that focuses on body mechanics instead of all that chi hocus pocus. Getting things out of line is veeery damaging, as my knees will testify.

All the same, there are times when you need something on your feet. How about a pair of moccasins? I guess they're traditionally made from skin, but you may be able to find something made out of oil-derived products instead. I seem to remember my mother having a pair of moccasins a million years ago and the leather soles became very smooth and slippery with use, so synthetics are probably better from a purely practical point of view.

Soooo.... instead of helping people buy a pair of Reeboks, is anyone publishing plans for how to set up moccasin production facilities in countries where people need protection from parasites?

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

It is 7'oclock, I was late home from work due to an assignment that i wanted to get ahead on. By the time I get home I am feeling extremley tired and I cannot be bothered to make a proper meal. All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
