Learn 7, Urban Resilience

  • What are the most likely natural disasters, food shortages, power outages, political crises, health outbreaks, or other social disruptions that YOU should be prepared to face with resilience?

    Pick one.
I live in Southern California, so the most likely crisis for us to face is an earthquake with the associated transportation, power, and water infrastructure damage.

  • What different kinds of data would you track in the crisis?
For disaster relief… Continue

The Future Beach

My city will be clean and have lots of buildings for community use. there will also be parks since i live in Galveston, andsince is my primary intrest, my focus will be on the beaches. There will be 24 lifeguard service, restroom service, and food service.

Nothing like the beach

I found out that the average person in Galveston just knows about the beach, not really any parks.

I told a lot of people about some of the parks on island. No one really wanted to go to them. There is a park that is right next to my work. I work at a coffee shop and they have smoothies there also. Well we stated advertising that we would bring smoothies to the people at the park if they wanted it. Now a lot more people come to the parks. AND since more people…

Facebookit

I think that the best way to share urgent information is Facebook. I can post something, and then it is OUT THERE. Someone else coppies it and then shares to someone else and the train as been started. I can share information about natural disasters, food shortages, power outages, political crises, health outbreaks, or other social disruptions. ALL OF THEM.

So if there is this freak tornado that popps up. If I put that on Facebook, then…

My city in 2020

My city of Gallipolis, in the future will be much greater than today. The city's neighborhood will begin expansion along the highway's, while leaving considerable room for nature in the form of designated and connected areas where human construction is not allowed. A new water purification plant will open brining even more pure water to the people of my city by purifying the water from the Ohio River. A New Solar Plant will generate the power alon with solar panels placed atop of a portion…

The Threat of Disease

One alarming scenario for HK would be the arrival of a new virus that quickly spreads through the densely populated city. Sharing knowledge on the spread would be of vital importance. A network like Ushahidi could help collect data on where outbreaks have occurred and when it would be safe to stay at home, share encouragement that the situation is manageable, and provide advice on where to go for medical assistance. Data of hospitals and other medical service providers would also be useful. In… Continue

Greenville 2020/2030

Third try again for uploading my map onto the site.

I am submitting the actual Greenville Plan for 2030, which I think is impressive. My map had more mixed use planning along existing outdated/traditionally zoned areas that have turned commercial. I am a big fan of mixed use developments and my 2020 plan revised some old big box stores into healthcare/daycare/senior care facilities. I incorporated community farm plots and also preserved more greenspace in my map. Then I found the… Continue

Greenville Wisconsin is Green- no kidding!

My little town of Greenville is promoting carbon footprint awareness and the thirty year plan includes: water conservation, rail system, and alternative energy plans. The thirty year plan is very impressive. I did not know it existed until this exercise. I have shared it with my neighbors, who didn't know either!

007 URBAN RESILIENCE

Ushahidi could be applicable to election fraud and violence in Nigeria by presenting usable data on ballot box snatching, places where there were violence and attacks on innocent voters.

Ushahidi can also be useful in sensitization and orientation of the people by the electoral body. It can also go a long way to curb the problem of missing names in voters registers.

Most of the malpractices during elections are carried out in the rural areas where communications and security…

I think the biggest disaster is health outbreak. If there was some kind of disease that doctors can't cure, those infected can be easily killed or be spread through human beings. The harm of it must be the greatest. An typical example was SARS. At that time, the year 2003, all countries were threatened by it. People stayed home, the wh*** society had stopped working except doctors busying in the hospitals, fighting against such invisible MONSTER.

Crisis that I will most likely face in the future is a gasoline shortage. I could look online at places to buy fuel from but that is only post-poning the problem. The only thing that can be done is to find ways, while the electricity still works, to create alternative means of generating heat, means of travel, and operating machinery. Unfortunatly the latter will not be able to be fixed quicky. Hybrid cars will still fail so pure electric, low speed cars become the only option. The key element… Continue

Map

I imagine in 2020 Deer Park will have expanded in many ways. We will have a new building set up specifically for the emergency management office, which will have expanded providing many new jobs. Older parts will have been cleaned up thanks to having started a clean up department.

Emergency Managment

I haven't lived in Deer Park for very long and don't know much about it but what I do know is that it is a very tight community they have their own TV station that provides information concerning things that are going on in the community whether it be about the schools, the city, or an emergency it keeps you informed. Many people know about this station and that is one way people stay informed. As a researched more though I found that Deer Park also has an emergency managment office that is… Continue

007 URBAN RESILIENCE

NEMA: http://www.nema.gov.ng/resp&recov.htm is the only Urban resilience plan that could be sighted in Nigeria. Disaster such as flooding is a bedevilling situation that the people had to face every rainy season. After each round of lament, the same event repeats itself without any concrete solution in place. Now that Urban resilience is on the table, i know no city where I could point to Urban resilience plan in Nigeria. Even NEMA…

Local Crisis

- Flooding is the only major disaster that seems likely around here.

- Things to moniter would be rainfall, water levels, roads cut off from flooding, and weather forcast for the near future after the flood. Also, coordination would be imparitive to making sure damage is at a minimal.

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. I walk to the fridge and open it to see what there is for me to eat. All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
