By 2020 the world is quite different, economic collapse and environmental dysfunction in the past has forced us to make changes. Using smart technology combined with old knowledge from less developed countries, we
have returned to lifestyles and development more in tune with nature. Vertical
green wall structures have replaced a lot of pesticide polluted farm fields and
increased production is virtually eliminating food shortages. Major focus has
been on…

I've enjoyed several of the PopTech videos. Several seem to embody the idea of using what's available right in front of us and putting to a radical new use. I've chosen to follow Derek Lomas and the PLAYPOWER Foundation. It's impressive to see the use of what is considered "ancient" technology being repurposed to provide learning at a very affordable price.

People often talk of complex answers to problems. Generally this includes a high-tech solution to a problem, however, more often than not the answer is right out in the open. Readily observable to all who are willing to see the situation from a different point of view. When this is done, the answer seems rather obvious. That is why it is so important to remember that what you have matters more than what you lack.
While technology is very useful, some of the most ingenious examples of…

My favorite secret for social innovation: "Create “transparent” technologies, ones that are easily understood by the users, and promote local innovation."
A transparent technology (tool or solution) feels natural, makes sense because it works simply, and becomes an extension of the people it's designed to serve.
More importantly, people will make a transparent technology their own. They will shape it,…

Innovating on existing platforms has always been a strength in attaining new technological discoveries and foundations. As a programmer and tinkerer, there is a philosophical approach for me to use code or electronics that have already been made, and improve them, if not create something even more helpful. For example, many people throw away old computers. In New York City, old computers litter the streets because the garbage companies refuse to pick them up, they are indispensable due to their…

I have seen a few facts in my days. The average "First World" citizen uses 150 gallons of water every day, while "Third World" citizens struggle to get five. All of the electricity generated over the past 110 years across the world is one only tenth of the energy the Earth receives from the Sun on a daily basis. Hard facts, that show development is important. Sure, sure, it would be nice if the community got tourism, but the real goal is to even the playing field.…

It is a hot morning in Galkacyo, Somalia in the year 2020. Fowsia woke up about an our ago and is now ready to go to work. She catches one of the new electric buses that now provide transportation for many of Galkacyo's citizens. On most mornings she thinks about all the tasks that lay ahead at work as she rides the bus. Today, however, as Fowsia is looking out the window and going over her action plan for the day she sees a woman who looks a lot like she did ten years ago. Fowsia isn't sure,…

In 2086 the way we interact with the world has become completely intertwined into technology. There very little on the planet that won't interact with your PSC (portable super computer).
When the technology was first introduced to the world in 2009, it was mind boggling. It's now mind boggling how we never had it before.
Human society has turned into a bucket, filled only by the information provided through our PSCs. Lost in history are what I…

Create “transparent” technologies, ones that are
easily understood by the users, and promote local innovation.
Too many things are created as back boxes, locking the users out of any understanding of the true functioning of that tool.device/etc...open design, transparency, leads to novel and innovative uses un-constrained by certain inhibiting factors (profit, etc). Being able to see into, alter and recombine technologies would lead to more rapid and… Continue

i've returned to quebec after 7 months of absence to find my province sabotaged by politicians. with friends i've discussed a variety of guerilla actions, or even just the possibility to head to toronto this summer for the G4 summit, meet-up with activists and
contest the decisions our leaders are taking in respect to our heritage, our resources and our fate.
this is perhaps the main reason why, in sudden frustration, i've decided to try and do something now, something…

Hello everyone,
I've had the topic of food challenge on my mind for the past few days, indirectly so. I'm trying to gain muscle, and all the muscle building articles talk about taking in more calories. So every time I sit down to a meal, I wonder who is starving at the moment. Not to the point…

With knowledge being power, I'm starting feeling like a secret agent. I checked out the possiblities and found some very interesting things. Inventec Appliances based in Taipai can build the wifi ipads for just 259 in parts, The same style of system could be made with discount parts and when size and speed expectations are somewhat lowered you could possibly have a cheap piece of technology able to contain limitless information regarding any chosen subject. My design is in my head, and this…

Just caught this on my Google alert of the word "nano"

I am beginning to watch a Zotero tour video here is the link

here is a shorter video

I have thought more about how to create a network of experts, and am considering inviting friends from Q&A sites. They are all talented experts but I'm not sure which ones would be best. Also there seem to be many different willing teachers who can be found through Google video. These passionate individuals take it upon themselves to produce videos teaching and explaining, It is up to us to spread the information around if we are to create an environment of innovation.
We…

Considering that we wont be regularly using nanotech to produce cheap photovoltaic sheets for a solid decade or two, how about using the old photvoltaic crystal set up in cars, using suction cups, and putting them in the back windows. The average watts per sq foot seems to be between 10 to 15 per sq ft. Seems that anyone with a car window has a spare square foot or two and can replace using grid power with solar. This also could attempt to balance some of the carbon emissions that the car is…

Difficult to choose from the list but I've gone for
Create “transparent” technologies.
I think this is particularly pertinent in this forum as it promotes collaboration and innovation. Open source technology allows people to get involved and add their own changes, maybe even solve a problems that is very personal to them, rather than accepting the generic solution.
Allowing people to get involved in the technology around them and not shrouding it in a…

In practice, the phrase "Amateurs talk about tactics, but professionals study logistics" is a simple and absolute way to describe how I like to think.
So, lets get thinking. Technology is a beautiful thing, and it has really become even more amazing as time goes on. If we went back just twenty years so many of our modern marvels would blow the minds of the common people. Handheld lasers that can cause fires, making solar cells in our back yards, and of course...…

Since many of us use mp3 players that are battery powered, we could do better by recharging the batteries through a green source rather than an outlet or buying new batteries. Inspired by the sOccekt, I believe the technology could be adapted to a belt pouch. As one walks, the movement would cause energy to be generated. This energy would then be put into the battery for one`s mp3 player. Thus each person would have 2 batteries. While using one, the other would be charging in the belt pouch…
