A crash course in changing the world.
After taking an agricultural issues class last semester, I became aware of so many "food deserts" right here in the state of Florida. I was shocked because I have never expierienced such a thing and one city in particular stuck out to me because it was so close to my home. It was Miami. Some places in Miami are so poverty stricken that they have no access to clean water and any kind of healthy food. Being from the city and so poor they dont even have the resources available to them so that…

Women's watch is a neat site designed to empowering women. I read about the UNESCO making education available to a broader range of people, and I found in another article on Women's Rights in Qatarabout women being allowed to run for office, vote, pursue an education. They're working towards equality across social, economic and political boundaries.

For this mission, I chose providing skills not just technologies. I think that the most important thing for changing poverty stricken nations is to tech them how to utilize certain technologies so that they can continue to use them and get the most benifit. I always loved the saying "give a man a fish and feed him for a day, teach a man how to fish and feed him for a lifetime." #LEARN1

I have chosen Jason Aramburu. Jason launched re:char in 2005 to develop low-cost technologies that fight climate change while improving the quality of degraded soils. re:char’s systems convert agricultural waste into renewable fuel and into biochar, preventing the emission of CO2 via decomposition. The biochar is used to improve soil on farms, locking away emissions for thousands of years. By producing energy, sequestering atmospheric carbon and improving soil quality, re:char brings the…

I found the section about dealing with group panic to be very interesting because I had never given much thought to the fact that there has to be a group of people ready to help deal with community panic in high stress and disaster situations. Everyone copes with fear and anxiety very differently but many people's response would be to panic instead of waiting to hear all of the facts about the situation at hand. I read the article from Harvard about the reasons why panic can become such an…

When I'm 100 years old I will want to pass down a lot of wisdom to my family and fellow citizens of the community I live it, which, at that point, may or may not end up being an indigenous community. I think that the main thing that I will want people to realize is that our natural resources are finite and that we need to appreciate them while we have them and not abuse them the way we so often do. I will want to make sure that children grow up and are being raised to understand the…

I read an article from the KIVU site about lawmaking and the debate about whether laws even need to be in effect if people are just going to break them. Some very interesting points were made and I have never really given much thought to the subject until today but I agree with the school of thought that says that no matter if people are going to deliberately disobey them, laws are very necessary to keep our society functioning safely and properly. Without laws, people would have no societal…

Representatives from The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the World Food Program (WFP) came together on April 4th to discuss their contribution to the ongoing intergovernmental discussions on the post-2015 development agenda, the successor framework to the Millennium Development Goals. They stressed the imporatnace of finished up the jobs of the Millennium Development Goals that are set to expire in 2015…

It is difficult to think of a kind of currency I have never used before to make a transaction. The problem with currencies is that they have to be wanted on the receiving end. A transaction I guess you could say I made or currency used was my time. In exchange for my time spent baking brownies I received a point towards my sorority. The future of money is rather terrifying because of the economic crises we have endured and I am not the best person to come up with an innovative idea. I…

Recently I have heard a lot about Bitcoins and not much on what they are or do. Apparently they are not even backed by the government, so why they are being used a currency I am unsure. The problem with using alternative currencies is that they fluctuate in value constantly. I think this kind of creative solution will only cause problems for the world, not solve them.

I would put together a huge event where individuals bring gallons of water jugs. The jugs would be placed in specific groups specified by country, like US, Africa, China, etc. The jugs would represent the amount of water us as americans use on a daily basis and how much other countries who don't have access to clean water like us use. The idea is to bring awareness of how we need to help others gain access to the same resources as us, and those gallons of water would be brought to needing…

Water for People has a lot of ways those who are interested can get involved. They have numerous events across the globe in which you can attend, or you can even host your own benefit event. They also have a volunteer program for those who are more hands on. Of course, you can always just donate fund directly to their site!

The Water Project is a nonprofit organization that "brings relief to communities around the world who suffer needlessly from a lack of access to clean water and proper sanitation." The volunteers help provide the people of the communities, of which they maintain relationships with, access to clean, safe water. The Water Project works closely with local in-country teams and partners to develop clean water programs for under developed areas. They help places like Burkina Falso, Kenya, South…

New Years Eve is known for bright lights and a cool evening of festivities with friends and family. In 2020 all those lights will be powered by solar energy stored up in a power warehouse from the wh*** year. It will be the brightest New Years Eve the country has ever seen, as New York City will be able to be seen from the moon because it is lit up from street to street.

I have always been fascinated by the use of solar energy. This may already exist but it would be amazing if we could use a solar plate on the hood of our cars to provide some energy. My car spends most of its' time in the sun as I don't have a parking garage at my apartment complex, and with gas prices rising every day it would be nice to have some help from a resource that is so abundant. Florida is known for the sunshine so lets use it to our advantage!

After typing 'sustainable energy projects' I came across scientificamerican.com which listed the worlds 10 largest renewable energy projects. I was surprised to find that there was one right in the United States. The worlds largest landfill gas recuperation plant is located in Whittier, California. The plant produces power from the gas that seeps out of landfills, which is a better alternative than setting it on fire. This power plant averages 50 megawatts and hasn't even reached its climax…

The creative solution I came up with is not giving our damn money to other countries. Also, I understand that there are going to be times that we have to go to war, but we need to find another way to fun our wars. If we stopped investing overseas, spending so much on war, and giving other countries our money, the value of a U.S dollar would be greater. This would make the biggest change in how we use money in the future.

For World Water Day 2020, I'm going to ask the wh*** world to participate in a water count project. The competition will be divided up into cities all around the world. Each member in a city will be asked to watch and count how much water they use in a day. The idea is for everyone to use only the amount of water they actually need. Each household will divide up how much water they used for a wh*** day (i.e. toilets, showers, lawn, washing machine, etc.) The city and each member in that city…
