In my hometown of El Sobrante, there is a homeless community that has no real secure food security and they roam the streets looking for a reliable food source. All along the main street in our town there are several restaurants. Having worked in the service industry I know that restaurants throw out lots of food every day and I believe that if these restaurants decide to give food that is going to be thrown out in a few days to the homeless or let the local churches distribute the food that is…

The biggest challenge to food security in my local community Alameda County is underway going through changes. San Francisco's number of residents on food stamps has grown by 55 percent over the past year and a half. Now more than 41,000 San Franciscans use food stamps. (SF Gate, 2010). This is statistics of San Francisco, our local neighbor of Alameda/Oakland. There are innovative solution programs that are out there but it lacks community outreach. Many people are not aware or concern of the…

"Innovate on existing platforms (We’ve got bicycles and mobile phones in Africa, plus lots of metal to weld. Innovate using that stuff, rather than bringing in completely new tech.)"
In the United States, movements that consider going "back to the land," cultivating organically and consuming locally are often the province of the privileged and economically comfortable. The objective is to minimize environmental impact and support local business, but since…

"Problems are not always obvious from afar."
As we look at our world, as we analyze the challenges faced by certain regions, its very important that we refrain from assuming cookie cutter solutions will actually work on the ground. That is why living among the people is a critical component of problem solving in unfamiliar areas.
Consider the example of an attempt to solve a food shortage by sending seeds and basic sustainence to a foreign nation. Seems like a clear…

Does you city have the capacity to sustainable resilient delivery systems? Many times urban communities in africa have suffered devastating crisis either social-ecological or natural.

"Flu Epidemic killing Kenyans" the headlines in all the daily newspapers scream. Although the reports carry some truth, no helpful solution is offered to the hundreds of thousands of readers on where they can access additional help and information. It is time for an Urgent Evoke!
A****sing the situation to see that although a lot of people have a lot of questions (frequently the same questions), there is no clear place where they can find…

Ushahidi could help to map bankruptcy in the Netherlands. This could help the huge group of people that doesn't have a job anymore because their company doesn't exist anymore. Especially the (not director/management) employees could get a job more easily if companies use Ushahidi to contact potential employees (because they had nothing to do with the bankruptcy, that was just bad management or a sudden bad economic situation in the country).
Ushahidi could have Human Resources…

I am about to enjoy dinner with my family. It is a special occasion, we want to celebrate last week’s victory: governments forming the ALCA (North-South America’s Free Trade Agreement) finally banned transgenic crops for good. This has its origin back in 2010 with a petition initiated in Canada:…

If this article in the Guardian is correct, the US military are predicting that global oil reserves will be gone by
2012. I think this will have a huge impact on our local lives in thedeveloped world. We are hugely dependent on the global transport network for almost every daily need.
What's the situation where you…

In 3010, maybe they will remember that we started a garden in the Southeast corner (bottom left in this photograph) of the Kissena Corridor Park Gardens. They will have a big celebration to mark the 100th year of gardening there.
Take a look at our videos from the first weeks of this effort:…

I have decided not to pick one of the case studies that Alchemy has given us to choose from, but to remember my own story that I heard of a similar community eco-focused success story.
While at a conference my freshman year, I heard this story.
In Thailand, I believe, there was a small fishing village. It was a very, very poor village and the worse yet: it's source of income was running out. The village relied on selling seahorses in local markets to make money, as seahorses…

If there was a tornado or other crisis in the town i am living I would utilize text messageing, actual phone calls, facebook, twitter and actually going door to door to alert and help people. the ushahadi project is excellent but we need to have one for each town in the US! I would also use the TV and any local chatrooms to check up on people and what they have heard. I would be calling everyone I know.
short but sweet.

In Austin the big stores, Walmart, Randalls/Safeway and HEB have cornered the grocery market
We also have high end stores like wh*** Foods, Natural Grocery and Sun harvest. Food prices increased by a whopping 20% in april 2010, the biggest leap since 1984.
I see people sifting through the bulk food aisle because they're barely getting by on their social security and welfare payments and unemployment.
I see long lines at the drivethroughs for fast food, and smell the rank…

Hello this is Sunny Du Pree and I come live with an amazing groundswell of activity from the local community. Here in Amarillo, things have really been difficult as many people struggle to keep their home and body together. Many go homeless and unfed. But there is a new hope surrounding these desperate people as we see by their faces. "Sir, sir, can you please tell me what is happening"? "Yes mam, said the cowboy. "Me and mine we got sick of seeing people go without so we got our churches,…

It's 2073 and I am still teaching sustainable farming. In todays class I tell of a free local garden input that is already available for home use. The native bee.
Native bees are usually unnoticed by most people. They are the best pollinators around. Compared to honeybees, native pollinate 10 to 15 times more efficiently, both males and females pollinate, the are more hardy in their local environment. Making accommodations for them is also a lot easier and requires very…

ten years has seen some major changes in the ideas surrounding money and currency. after what is now called the 'Final Crash' of 2018, people finally decided to end the affair with the stock market and unstable trading/currencies. the currencies of individual countries had fluctuated to the point that they were no longer even usable. companies that relied heavily on stock value collapsed. the 'too big to…
