Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

Hello EVOKE.

Over the past two weeks I have been monitoring the increasing dissatisfaction that people are having with EVOKE. What I thought I would do is be one of those def-mutes--just ignore the grumblings and play the game. This week we saw the first instances of EVOKE members leaving, and in an effort to prevent that from happening again I want to share some thoughts with you all.

First: EVOKE is not about getting the most power points. The power points are there to help give feedback and give little encouragements, they are not the intention of the game. Don't get locked into thinking that you need to make a hundred posts or spam everyone with messages so that you can get to the top of the leader board. The people at the top are there because they post meaningful content that other people like to see.

Second: EVOKE is an endurance race not a sprint. Any athlete will tell you that pacing is vital in a long distance race--the same advice is valid here. Don't stay up to 4 am on EVOKE, it will still be here when you wake up. You might get the wrong impression reading the graphic novel, in that world the EVOKE agents solve the energy crisis in two pages. Real change unfortunately takes years, and its the people who can commit themselves to that time line who make the difference. But don't let this discourage you, Rome was not built in a day.

Third: Keep your eyes on the prize. Don't let what other people are doing distract you. Remember, you are here to help change the world, not complain that someone is farming for power points, in the end the points won't matter.

Last but not least: Work together! You as single person only have so much time and talent. Single celled organisms grouped together to form larger organisms for a reason. If you want some more encouragement what if at the end of the 10 weeks they measure a groups power by adding up all the individual member's power points.

So in conclusion; Keep your head up, go to bed, work hard, work together and stay focused!

True, but if we have a points system then why do you think people are not going to try to get more points as they can? Noone on earth isn't competitive and as long as they can make them self stand out(be on the leaderboard) they will try to do it no matter how many times you say to them it doesn't matter, he/she knows it but he/she still wants those points!
You need to get the leaderboard out of the game! I'm on it(was until the compromisation, but the points are still there so I know im 22nd) but I don't like it and even I want it out just like anyone else

I don't know about "no one on earth isn't competitive". I'm getting plenty out of this game to just bandy about ideas, get some more info on how I can do more in my life, and maybe throw together a good evokation while I'm at it. Just reading this had me, this afternoon, looking up ways to form seed balls, ways to make a pedal-powered generator (that'll take a bit, actually), native Kentucky plants to make a gratitude garden, and water conservation methods. If all this ends up being is a environmental/social clearinghouse, it's still a good service.

In this game the competition is disease, of all kinds. Toxicities, deficiencies, and so on. You compete against the negative stuff in the world that harms people. Suffering is our opposition.

what most people seem to be overlooking and what you kinda mention, we ALL SPEND WAAAAAAAAY TOO MUCH TIME on the internet... its being put to good use, but hey... wayyy too much time.

Thanks for the encouragement Winterminute. If it's one thing I've learned from being here, is that being such bright people, we can all find some way to challenge one another, and sometimes that gets taken too far. It takes a lot of guts from everyone to put their opinions up here, and I for one am having a great time.

@LukVance (BTW, I just figured out this @ standard everyone is using :))
I'd love to hear your ideas, please feel free to shoot me a message, as I'm always looking for other people that love games and technology and want to work on stuff!

I understood EVOKE as an opportunity to learn and work together with others, to contribute, as much as I can. I don’t have as much time as some youngsters to hang on a computer for an eternity... The problem you are addressing is caused by a participant’s motivation. Those with extrinsic motivation will be interested in votes (which is external motivating tool). Those that have strong intrinsic motivation will find the meaning in the process completing missions, learning, connecting to others.... etc. Anyhow, it is good that you find a nice way to support game players and to point out the overall aim of the game.... to make our place of living worth of living.

Don't discriminate against insomniacs! jk, I very much appreciate the post.

LukVance, there are many sorts of games out there, and while zero-sum games are fully competitive, cooperative games reward players less for those same strategies. If you have an interesting idea for competition, I'm all ears, but I usually play Civilization for Diplomatic Victory :-)

I just wanted to chime in and say I appreciate the J.D. Salinger reference.
Oh, and in regards to the discussion at hand, I like to think that the way you win EVOKE is by completing the missions. The power points are just an extra feature allowing social interaction between players and certainly aren't meant to be the main focus of playing.

Great initiative wintermute. I share your thoughts. I myself have been falling behind. Although I did my share of reading about last weeks topic I didn´t complete anything. It seemed as though everything was already out there and I couldn´t add anything new. Plus I started a new job and must devote time to that. I really like evoke and will contribute by at least spreading the word. If I can do more I will... but if not power to people like you and those that do things properly.

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
