Sustainability = Renewable Energy + Time

Everything we need to do to become 100% sustainable boils down to having two things: enough renewable energy and the time to use it.

The good news is that we have more than enough renewable energy available to us to do everything we need. The question is whether we will have enough time to use it, to clean up our global messes before numerous ecological crises become… Continue

The Zambesi River and The International Crane Foundation

A few miles away from where I live is The International Crane

Foundation which is dedicated to the idea of establishing self-sustaining

populations of all the crane species in the world. One of their

underlying ideas is that to carry out their mission the entire

community surrounding each required bird environment must be brought

into the project. One result is that sustainability is achieved for

many other things under the cover of the highly visible… Continue

Vertical farming

It's a very interesting proposition that could cut cost of transportation of food to urban environments, and enable a degree of self-sufficiency to cities. I hope it will be tasty. ;)

Another Kind of Buffalo Wing

Monique’s Chix Video: The Kids Are Alright

A lot of people have heard of Buffalo Wings. They are Buffalo, NY's claim to culinary fame (http://www.anchorbar.com). Last year, however, there was an issue in Buffalo that involved a different sort of chicken wing... the live and flapping kind. A local couple that was keeping several hens in their backyard were told by a City of Buffalo Animal Control Officer that they could not keep their chickens (…

Trying to get Evoke Dirty

Okay, so I just did something I think deserves a couple courage points. I sent an email to the makers of Dirt: The Movie (trailer in the videos section) asking them if they would give an exclusive online access to members of the Evoke network.

Here's what I wrote:…

The Capital of Food Security

In researching for the second Evoke mission I have discovered something wonderful. Ottawa, where I live is the capital of food security. A bold claim I know, but I think its true. So here's my evidence. This city is the only capital (Ottawa is Canada's capital in case you didn't know) to have a farm right in the middle of the city. And its not some pretend farm to show kids how it all works. Established in 1886, The Central Experimental Farm is 400 hectare working farm that serves as the… Continue

ACT1

Michael Pollan, my social innovation 'hero'.

I've become increasingly concerned with food. Food manages to tie itself to a myriad of social situations. We are what we eat, after all. One of the major issues that MP speaks, writes, and educates us about is food sustainability. I first came across MP through a talk he gave at TED (you can check it out here:… Continue

Pure water everywhere

Hello again everyone!

Water! What an interesting subject! In fact, I spent 10 months living in the Pacific (Vanuatu 7 months and Solomon Islands 3 months) and I've faced that problem.

When I arrived in Port-Vila (capital city), it was not a problem because they had appropriate installations, but as soon as I left (after half a day), I did not have access to clean water. As it was my first time in such country, I did not have any purification…

Exergy, Sustainable IT and Cities 2.0

My friend and colleague Chandrakant Patel of HP Laboratories has been a leader in thermal management and energy efficiency for large scale data centers for nearly 20 years. He has made it his life's work to make IT more energy efficient, and his vision has grown progressively broader over the years. He recognizes that information technologies such as PCs, mobile phones and cloud computing are becoming an increasingly pervasive and vital infrastructure for modern society, and the need to… Continue

Celebrate the Spring or Summer Environment - Without Harming It!

As the weather is steadily becoming nicer on the first day of Spring, I offer my tips on how you may take advantage of this weather to make an ecologically friendly party:

  • Have it outside on a fair, sunny day; no need for air conditioning or lights, just sunlight and a nice breeze.
  • Prepare vegetarian dishes made from locally grown produce. Livestock you eat need to be fed themselves, and transported, creating a huge carbon footprint that…

2020 Vision, More Sustainable, Less Wasteful

In 2020, I am at home, living in a small town not too close or too far from a large urban metro region. It is good to be close to nature, but also close to people and all that civilization offers.

My house is super insulated, using mostly geothermal energy to heat it in the winter, and cool it in the summer, and to warm water all year long. We are using electricity for the remainder of our power needs. We have solar electric panels on the roof and a small windmill to…

students solar power a car

A group of students from the university of Delft participates in the solar challenge every two years in australia. So far they won in 2001. 2003. 2005 and 2007. The objective is to drive with a car entirely powered by solar energy 3021 kilometres as fast as possible.

Ofcourse this is nice for the race but these kind of initiatives also encourage to find better ways to use solar power, to get more energy from it and find more applications. This is important because there is enough sun…

Power myself more sustainable

I decided not to look at my direct power use but actually at the indirect power use through food that I use to power myself. I can't even imagine how much power it costs to transport food all over the world or to grow it in greenhouses. Or the unsustainability of meat-eating (1 kilo of meet needs 10 kilo of plants, in terms of how much an animal has to eat, not even naming the waste production of animals).

So I will start to eat meat just once a week (still once a week for…

Fourth Of July

Hopefully on fourth of july in 2020 there will be reusable fireworks, like big spark wheels (you know the ones you used as a kid?), and we wont be releasing all those fumes into the atmosphere!

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

It is 7'oclock, I was late home from work due to an assignment that i wanted to get ahead on. By the time I get home I am feeling extremley tired and I cannot be bothered to make a proper meal. I walk to the fridge and open it to see what there is for me to eat. All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
