Reactions and overreactions

When people initially become aware of a risk, they overreact. They have a temporary short-term overreaction. People pause what they're doing, become hyper-vigilant, check out the environment more carefully than they normally would and—this is perhaps the most important characteristic of the adjustment reaction—they take precautions that may be excessive, may be inappropriate, and are certainly premature. (Peter Sandman on… Continue

Pay It Forward

Yesterday I cleaned the kitchen for my parents without them asking or realizing that I was going to do it, and in return they giving me some money to go shopping that I can buy CD's with. If you do acts of kindness for another, it is all too often that they will return the favor and do something kind for you, often with you even asking! If this were to happen on a global scale, people would be much more friendlier to one another, and possibly much more could get done! Pay It Forward, starring… Continue

Transferring Money - Simple and Easy

Michael Ivey has an idea that transferring money and paying people should be as easy as sending a twitter message on your iPhone. Many people get direct deposit or a check handed to them from their employer, but Michael's solution sees the future of how money can be transferred, and valuable resources could be saved in the process.

With Twitpay, Michael has linked his PayPal account to his twitter account, and today the service has almost 15,000 users.

"Moving money, once a function… Continue

Water Movie

I plan to use my talents in filmmaking to make a water related movie that has water as part of the major plot-line. Through my resources I will have famous actors act in the movie and it will spread around the world. The movie will be about a shortage of water supply, and at the end there will be a water-awareness related activity that would make the viewer realize that this problem was real. It will take place in a third world country (or at least part of it) and the other part will take place… Continue

Colorado Climber's Three-Year Expedition

Internationally acclaimed mountain climber Jake Norton is hoping to raise water awareness by climbing each of the Triple Seven Summits, the three highest peaks on each continent.

He hopes to raise at least $2.1 million dollars and have 2.1 million people recognize his achievement and become interested in water awareness.

"If people are fetching water all day, they can't attend school. If they're dying of water related illness before they get to school, library, or computer, nothing… Continue

EPEC virus in Germany - How Do People React in a Pandemic?

In Germany is currently being reported a lot about the EHEC virus. Normally, only a few percent (per year) die from the intestinal bacterium, but this year the disease occurs in a higher frequent and there were already 11 deaths that were brought in connection with the bacterium. The bacterium is probably spread over salad, especially cuc**bers, or vegetables.

Amazingly I think of the reactions in my circle of friends. Everyone reads day by day in the newspapers or online about the… Continue

Food security - imagine...

Where are you?

Still in Lagos

Who are you eating with?

With family, on occasion with the neighbours, hardly, if ever, anywhere else.

Where did your food come from? How did you get it?

Bought fruit and veg locally and from a nearby market. Chances are it's been brought down from the North of the country - no change there. Food production in…

Coming to Terms With Uncertainty

I want to share my insight about the first of the five secrets of crisis communication “Coming to Terms With Uncertainty”.

In times of the internet news spread very fast around the world. To sell your story you have to come first. Out of this there isn’t really time for the journalists to investigate the story they want to tell about. What we often get from this is half-truth.

A very common doing these days is to put a story out there and a few minutes later it is gone or…

The blessing and the curse of Journalists - Learn 9

-    Managing Panic in Pandemic    -

For me, this is the most important point. The text tells about the power of journalist and how they can help to manage a pandemic. If it is right or not, but a lot of people believe that the journalists will rather tell us the truth than politicians. And so, they believe them.

So politicians can use this channel to reach the people during a pandemic.…

We plough the fields...

Whenever I think of that line, I'm reminded of a scene from "Curse of the Were Rabbit", when the vicar is lovingly poring over his prize veg for the upcoming show.

We don't have fields, but we have space. And to that end, I decided to do some planting. My sister-in-law brought some seeds, Mr did the digging, I planted, watered and weeded.

My intentions were good. The crops were coming up nicely and then...it rained. And rained. And rained some more. Then the dogs decided… Continue

Urban Resilience or just existence?

So we're talking about a city where it is estimated the could potential exceed 20 million by 2020.

The problem is, there is no strategy or plan, inasmuch as the current state governor, Babatunde Fashola, has been doing since his tenure started in 2007. In fact, it would be safe to say that he has done more for the city than previous governors barring Jakande in the 80s.

The city, in short, is overcrowded. It is not unreasonable to expect to be stuck in a traffic jam on the… Continue

Celebrating Sustainable Energy - 2020

Celebration for sustaining energy for the year 2020 can occur in ways such as switching from eectrical power, many organizations, businesses, residences to solar power.

Of course, we do not step into it straight from energy to solar; there is a process.

One of the items being promoted now is the Smart Meter process that shows customers how to cut down on their own energy. If more customers become "smart," the plan of Pacific Gas and Electric is for more customers to learn… Continue

Expert-Discussion - Imagine 9

I would create a web page for experts to exchange their ideas and to find solutions for pandemic. I think one of the most problems of newspapers, TV and Internet is that everybody can write or tell what he or she wants.

Well, of course this is also the big benefit, especially of the internet. But it is also a problem of our time. A lot of people belief this mediums and they often get panic when they read it.

Have you ever searched in the internet what it can…

News from the Bedlam

Maybe some of you readers are familiar with the game Civilization by Sid Meier. In early versions you needed entertainers to keep your population in check. That is my basic idea of establishing a crisis network which can also provide support in time of need.

First, you will have a hard time identifying those who can help. But normally you can also use a mechanic – before any crisis occurs – to categorize different tastes and also different artists. We also need the information who…

New way to power something used daily

The challenge for this assignment is to take something we have and learn a way to "power" this item in a totally new and different way.l

For the items I have available -- I immediately think of my cell phone. I tyically charge the phone by electricity in my home and, unfortunately leave the charger in the outlet -- even when not in use. When I use the cell phone, I open up many applications, which eventually drains the battery power of the phone much quicker than it would if I did… Continue

Social Entrepreneur, Electricity

Meet a young budding entrepreneur from humble beginnings in India who is set to change the world through a process of using rice husks. The company name is "Husk Power Systems; their CEO is Gyanesh Pandey.

Pandey was originally born in India, one of the nation's poorest states, populated with approximately 80 million people; 85 percent of them do not have access to real electricity. Without electricity, individuals suffer from poor hygiene, there is more darkness which brings on more… Continue

"Since its inception in 1990, Water.org had helped hundreds of communities in Africa, Asia, and Central America gain access to safe water and sanitation. All of the projects we support are self-sustaining, with organizational and financial structures in place to allow communities to independently operate and maintain them. Projects have an active water committee governing the operation of the water system, and users paying a water bill to cover the costs of operating and maintaining the water… Continue

The Future of Money

I am a fairly good writer out of my group of friends. My friend Brandon is a great mechanic. I made an agreement that if he would fix my car, I would put together his resume so that he could find a permanent job. I found that by us using our best skills and applying them as currency, we are able to help one another with quality services. I discovered that instead of using currency, we figure out what we are really good at and use it as our currency. If we do something we are really good at, it… Continue

The Future of Money

Local Exchange Trading Systems are what I found to be the most effective from the list of creative solutions regarding how we use currency. I thought that some of the other ideas were fairly effective however, this system could manage all of these currencies and bartering systems. In managing the exchanges and trades, we are able to figure out the values of what is being exchanged so that no one is short changed. Whether it be barter "craisgbucks" or "twitpay" all of these systems can be… Continue

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
